Fordson Hydraulic fluid vs. Oil

Now I am really confused. If I am going to use the remotes on my 55 Major ( I added an aux. remote control from a Power Major), what fluid should I have in the rear end? Should I have the hydraulic fluid so I can use the remotes, or should I use HD30W oil to better lube the rear, or can I run the 30W through the hydraulic cylinder?
Thanks for your help.

Why not just put Hy-tran in the Major? In my area, it is general practice to use hy-tran or Universal tractor fluid of various names in rear end, hydraulics, and transmission. It's not going to hurt the old ones, and is speced on all the new equipment. Just use the same fluid in all your gear. HTH.

Thanks for your discussion.

My Super Major came to me with hydraulic fluid already in the rear.So I will drain out the new fluid I put in and replace it with 20/30?The other three tractors have motor oil,one seems to have gear oil but will double check. You said you put remotes from a Power Major on a Major. As I have an extra(very dead)Power Major and possibly a Super, how much trouble is it to swap it into a Major?

The other thing I hear is that interchangeable implements from other tractor brands would be best served by pumps that are external to Fordson factory pump?Say a pto pump or a motor driven one?

Hydraulic fluids will cause major problems in the rear axle as they cannot lubricate the crown wheel/pinion/axle bearings. Ford recommend HD30 or a multiuse oil 20/30w in engine, gearbox and rear axle.

Unless you have an International tractor or another with a seperate rear axle/hydraulic system, you will not damage any implements/tractors by mixing the oil.

I have been working with these tractors for over 40 years in England, I worked for Ford dealers over here and this is where the tractor was built, so I do know these tractors. I also own 2 and use them on my holding. I use electric solenoid valves, cable operated valves and lever operated valves on my equipment too.

Majorman,
We do indeed have other tractors, all of them IHC. If I understand you correctly, I should use the 30w oil in the Fordson, but then I can't use the same hyd. cylinders on the IH tractors. Is that correct? That will be a real hassle if I can't swap implements. I will have to have a set of cylinders just for the major, and I will have to install them on any implements I want to run, then swap them back out when I want to use the IHC. Another question: I have powersteering on my major (pump mounted to the loader frame) from a Super. I have been putting hyd. fluid in that pump. Is that correct, or should that have 30w also?
Thanks for your help.

The oils used in the IH is usually a special oil called HiTran. This oil, as far as I am aware is used only for the hydraulic system not in the rear axle or gearbox. I am not an IH man myself so I am not sure. Hitran would dilute the Major axle oil as the small quantities were transfered from the implement hydraulic systems. This would not hurt the Major and I would be quite happy with this as I know farms that do just that. Most of the older tractors over hear run a 30W or Multiuse oil in the axle/hydraulic systems. The problem would be the transfer of small quantities of 30W oil to the IH hydraulic system. It might cause problems but I am unsure.

You are absolutly right to use hydraulic oil in the power steering system. A "normal" oil in here will foam and possibly damage the pump.

I forgot to mention that in at least one of the IHC tractors HyTran is used in the rear. We have a 706 that must have HiTran in the rear to operate the live PTO. The sump for the PTO is in the bottom of the rear, and it lubes the tranny, axels, etc. Takes 16 gallons, if I remember correctly. Just some FYI.

Thanks again for the info.
I will probably get a hydraulic cylinder or two just for the major. I wouldn't want to hurt any of the systems on the IHC tractors. My brother would go nuts!! I have run the HyTran fluid in the powersteering pump ever since I filled it with powersteering fluid one time. Talk about foam!!

Is this for all Majors and Dextras?
