I'm working on pulling the cylinder head on my '63 961 and got to the point where I am ready to loosen the nuts on the rocker arm and cylinder head and finally looked at my shop manual only to find out that there is no specified loosening order - it just says remove the bolts. Do I just pick my own order and do it a half turn at a time or is there an order that works better. I am used to pulling heads on cars and there is always a specified loosening order. Thanks - I'm trying to get it all done today since the tractor is outside and I am able to work today in a t-shirt since it is about 60 degrees - rare for an early January day in Missouri!

Hey jb, a 20' fall wouldn't do ya any good, but if you have enough snow you have to shovel it off the roof, it probably wouldn't kill ya either. :D

I'm just Southeast of Odessa (which is at exit 37 on I-70). We are about 45 minutes from Clinton. We go down to Truman Lake quite a bit, not so much to Lake of the Ozarks though.

Thanks everybody for the info. Head bolts all came right out, and I popped the head right off by putting the plugs back in, vice gripping the battery ground cable to the battery tray and hitting the starter - popped it right off. I should have checked the torque of the bolts when I took them off becuase I don't think they were tight enogh - I used a breaker bar and they seemed to break loose with very little effort - that may be why I blew the head gasket.

No specified loosening order. Just get after it with the air gun.

Headed back outside myself. 73° right now

Oh sure, heading out into 73 degree weather or working on your tractor in shirt sleeves and 60+ degrees. And I spend the day shoveling snow off the roof and chipping ice from the eves while staring over a 20' drop of death.

I'd much rather be popping the head off'n a tractor!
