Has anyone out there put a new front crankshaft seal in a TO30? If so whats involved? Thanks Curt

Yes, I did it while rebuilding the engine. You can replace this seal without removing the engine from the tractor. You will have to jack up the front of the tractor and remove the hood, radiator and the front axle. This should give you access to the timing gear cover. The oil seal is in that cover. You will have to remove the governor linkage, and the crank pulley. You can then remove the bolts holding the timing gear cover to the engine and remove the cover. The seal is in the cover, pressed in. There is also a felt seal in front of the rubber seal as a dust catcher. You can drive the old seal out with a hammer and screwdriver, then tap the new one in at the same depth. The felt seal just kind of falls out. You will note that the seal seals against the crank pulley, not the crankshaft itself.

Remember to put the seal in in the right direction (open sise of the seal faces inward; picture what oil pressure would do to it...and don't forget to get a new gasket to go between the cover and the engine block.
