H.Ferguson/ H.Ford Question

Other than the engine and a few other relatively minor parts, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of differences between the ford n-series and the American made Fergies. What I don't understand is how Harry could sue Henry over the use of the 3pt. system but then turn around and basically sell a copy of Henrys' tractor.

Another thing I've noticed is that several companies will list a part that fits the N-series but not list the part for a Ferguson when in reality the parts are one in the same.

And while I'm at it, does anyone know if the parts carried by a M/F dealer (other than n.o.s.) are of any better quality than the other parts supply places or do the M/F dealers just like to charge more?

Thanks for any answers/ opinions

Tyler

I have a 1951 TO-30 which I have almost totally restored/refurbished. When I started work on it I tried a few Ford 8-N parts. They look almost exactly the same but are just slightly changed so they are not always interchangeable; bolt patterns, holes, etc. I found a local parts dealer that got me an engine overhaul kit, clutch, etc., which worked so well. I parade mine as well as use it to plow and disc my garden. It is a great, small tractor.

Tyler, Go to the link section of the Harry Ferguson page and you'll find lots of information to answer your questions. Harry was quite an engineer and designer. He designed the first 4WD car and much much more, there's a list of his patents and inventions.

I thought the same too. But when I took apart a 1952 8N I found they were close but you can't interchange that much. The lift assembly looks like a TO-30 but the cylinder mount and top plate bolt holes are different, The Link bars are real close just different in lenght. Not sure about other parts tho. Mark H.

Tyler, while not the expert on your question, I will try to address a couple of parts. Harry owned the patents for the 3 point, Ford used them illeagally after the 'hand shake agreement' was terminated. As for looks, take a look at a 1935/6 Ferguson. Put a hood on and proper sized tires...its a modern (TO/TE) series Ferguson. The looks of Fords 2n,9n,8n were driven by Fergusons earlier designs and by the 3 point. While Ford deserves manufacturing credit, he was working from Fergusons designs. So actually the Fords are a copy of the Ferguson.

I don't know about other MF dealers, but I was really not treated fairly by the MF dealer in my town. It was a nightmare. Next time I will buy the tools and manual and do it myself.
