Hi!
My tractor has been having trouble starting, and then, putting out occasionally. I read an article somewhere about attaching a length of chain to the tractor so it dangles on the ground. Would this do anything to complete an electric circuit? If so, how would it work?

Right after getting my TO-20, I put new points, plugs and condensor in her. She began sputtering over the summer and gradually got worse. It final just sputtered continuously and wouldn't go and would barely start. I cleaned out the gas bowl and added a clear inline filter between the bowl and the carb. I rebuilt then replaced the carb. It still sputtered. I then replaced the coil with one off of an old MG of mine. I set and reset the points just to make sure I did it right. It still sputtered. I took a meter and checked the voltage at the switch, then the resistor, at the coil and at the points to make sure it wasn't a bad wire. I took a MG Midget condensor and replaced the 4 month old one and the thing ran fine. I ran it 3 days out of 4 this Thanksgiving with a Lucas condensor and she strolled along just fine moving dirt. Hope this helps.

If it's not cranking over reliably, in my opinion first thing to check is battery voltage and battery cables and cable hookups. Look especially at the connection where the ground cable attaches to the tractor. Those are easiest things to check and also the most likely problem areas.

I will go farther than John and declare categorically that it will not fix your electrical problem. Definitely, systematically go through connection by connection and clean them up. Once you can say with total confidence that your wiring is in good shape, then start checking the fuel system.

I beleave all that will do is take static out of the tractor. As for helping it start or run I would think not. The first thing I would do is check all the conections. I had the same wrong with my TO20, it was the choke. The thing was just flopping around in the carb. Hooked the cable back up and everything was OK.
