I decided to clean my gas tank as I was finding some sediment in the bowl continuously and after removing and starting to flush out the tank I heard a lot of clanking sounds in the tank. Upon inspection, there seems to be two(2) pieces of heavy duty sheet metal lying in the tank loose. They are hard to see clearly, but appear to be preformed pieces with strength channels pressed in them. They are suspeciously similar to the end pieces of the tank. Were these baffles to prevent fuel sloshing that have come loose or some assembly mechanic joke. To add to the mystery the fuel standpipe assy seems to be for a TO-20 as it has the screen around the standpipe inside the tank and it appears to be the source of the sediment as it has nearly corroded away. I guess it is safe to use the tank if the pieces are always submersed infuel, but I may change tanks if I can find one. So, anybody have any experience of this type or offer an explanation??

probably baffles, don't worry about them. remove the rusted screen on the standpipe and go to your autoparts store and ask for a tubular style brass screen that goes into the fuel line connection into some carburetors. Solder it onto the pipe. I did that to a Model A Ford nearly 40 years ago and it's still doing fine.

On my TO20 they are anti slosh baffles. My baffle has broken the spot weld to the exterior of the tank. Every few years I re solder the stress crack to the exterior of the tank.

Thanks guys. I just never imagined a tractor tank needing anti-slosh baffles, but I guess this may be the case. A new tank in one catalog was $249, so will keep my present tank and forget about the stuff in it. I have not spotted any welds on my tank as Duner mentioned but they may be subtle. Soldering is scary to me, since the flashpoint of gasoline must be less than the solder temp?

My baffles are held in by spot welds on the bottom of the tank.
I never solder with an open flame on gas tanks.

Soldering a gas tank is not for the amatuer ! There are several safe ways to do it, I have done it but I can think of better ways to spend my time. Soldering the screen to the tube is not a problem as long as you don't do it using the top of the tank as a solder bench !
