The other day I was mowing and I noticed a significant loss of power. I disengaged the pto and heard alot of rattling and knocking. I shut it off and pulled it back to the garage. The oil level was good and so was the water level. It would crank but wouldn't start. The next day I used jumper cables to start it and it knocked pretty loud. I immediately turned it off. Since then the engine won't crank and I can't even turn it over by hand. Any suggestions? Thanks for your input.

I removed the cylinder head and the oil pan and found what appears to be the retainer for the ball bearings from the governer in the oil pan. The rods, piston, & cylinders all appear to be in good shape. Haven't gained access to the governer yet to see what it looks like. Any ideas on what caused this or what to look for?

I haven't gotten an overhaul manual yet, do you know if you have to split the tractor to drop the pan? Oh by the way I entered 30 erroneously, it's actually a TO-35. Thanks for your input.

nope, just take out the bolts and it'll come down, but it's kinda heavy so be careful when the gasket breaks loose.

I would drop the oil pan and have a look see. Sounds to me like you may have lost a rod.
