Fergy Questions---- Help?

I'm in the process of restoring a '52 TO30 and am glad I found this sight.

My first question is what does one do when the seat on your tractor is shot and you need to replace the whole works. Can't find an original Ferg. type so can I go with a 9n set-up? I'll need the spring as well as the seat.

The head is also cracked though I'm not having any water in the oil. Can anyone recommend a place to get it welded or should I just replace it?

How about paint? Any brands out there that you people prefer? I'm sticking with the original color.

Thanks for any and all help. I'm sure I'll have more questions as the restoration progresses.

Thank you all for your help and encouragement.

I bought this tractor 2 years ago from my neighbor, his wife thought it was ugly and told him she wanted it out of her sight. I showed up to borrow a tool or something at about that time and ended up with my first tractor. I've hauled probably sixty cord of wood, skidded trees and, after buying a front mounted snow plow set-up, plowed my rather long driveway. I only paid 500 bucks for the tractor so at this point it owes me nothing and I've become quite fond of the ole girl. Whatever it needs, it's going to get.

I have the IT manual as well as what appears to be a copy of an owners manual full of strange looking cartoon characters having various mishaps with their tractors. Did Ferguson have a shop manual that's better than the IT that I have and can one be purchased? Thanks again for the help.

Tyler, I went to my local M-F dealer and bought the shop manual for $19. Don't know if you are close to a dealer but it would be a good idea to find the nearest one.

I suppose forty miles isn't what some people would call close but I just wait untill I need a few things and head out. Thanks George.

I'd take head to a pro. Better yet, take whole engine and have it checked. If head is cracked, block may be too as they are prone to that. Hard to find used seat. New 9N seat works great. Yes, you have to get the spring assembly too if yours is no good. Probably $100 for the works from the mail order places like Stevens, etc. Best match for the paint is NAPA 99L 3740 gray. Go to NAPA paint store and get the hardener and thinner that goes with that paint and get them to figure the measurements for you. A gallon will do the tractor if it is primed. I'm not a painter, but just painted a TO30 and it looks to be exact original color or so close no one can tell it isn't. I took it to a show and that was consensus. Don't get sticker shock, but the total cost of paint, hardener, and thinner is approximately $175. Email me if you like.

I second all that Dave said and would also recommend that you get a Ferguson shop manual. I got mine through e-bay but I have read here that they are available from Massey dealers. I have an IT manual and it isn't worth much next to the Ferguson manual.
As for getting the head welded I would check with local automotive machine shops or even better someone who restores tractors and has been through this. If you tell the folks here roughly where you live maybe someone can suggest a place.

Tyler: You're in for some fun and this forum is a great resource. I would suggest that you do some searches of the forum about some of your questions. A number of them have been addressed a few to many times in the past. There are a number of good sites that can be useful as well--check the Ferguson Links out above. Good luck and keep us posted, David, MI
