I always had a facination with old tractors. Last year I went out and bought a 52 TEA 20-85 (My first tractor)and immediately began to wire brush it, sand, and re-paint. I removed the plug wires and purchased new ones. I thought I remembered the order they were to go back on in (a year later). When I start the tractor it now runs rough and I beleive it is only running on two cylinders (Actually I know). When I look at the top of the distributor cap, the wire closest to the block and to the front goes to the cylinder at the front of the engine. As you move around the distributer clockwise, each wire goes to each cylinder from front to back. I have found on the internet that the firing order is 1,3,4,2. Can someone explain to me how this order should look physically? Thanks for any info.

Randy: Check first to make sure which direction the distributor travels (cap off, crank engine a few times). I beleive that it travels counter- clockwise. If this is true, your first cap/plug wire would be as you described. The second would be the next counter-rotated position on the cap/#2 plug; the third at the next counter-rotated position on the cap/#3 plug; etc.. Make sure the cap is properly seated on the distributor before you begin your process. I hope this helps. Keep us posted, David (in Michigan)

David, I did up a quick sketch in paintbrush and posted to the link indicated (my personal web space). If I understand you correctly, what you are saying makes perfect sense because when I pull the plug wires off of number three and four spark plugs the engine runs no differently. This makes sense to what I have sketch out. Thanks so much, I was beginning to worry about the internal engine. Let me know if this seems to make sense. I am anxious to try it tonight!

Randy: Your sketch (very effective) demonstrates what I was trying to describe (assuming counter-clockwise distributor rotation). Your current set up is wrong for either direction of distributor rotation and will yield the results you're getting. After you get things corrected, you may want to pull your plugs to make sure they are not fouled. Also check you engine oil to make sure that a lot of gasoline has not diluted your oil (check by smell and feel/look). I hope you're running smoothly by the end of the day! David (in Michigan)
