1 More Water in Oil Question

Sorry about another of these water in oil questions BUT, I purchased a TEA-20 with Standard engine and all has been going good refurbishing her until today. Drained oil when I got it home a couple of weeks ago and checked for water as usual and all was OK. Today when I removed the valve cover I saw a few drops of anti freeze, some condensation too because she was sitting for a while. In my limited experiance if you had a crack or head gasket leak you had a noticable amount of water in oil pan. I was going to do a valve job in the winter. Will it hurt to run it this way for awhile. If not too bad can it be sealed with a product called CRC. Is this amount not enough to worry about. Some seem to think that it can run for years, and that it ain't that unusual. This is my second tractor that I was refurbishing for light work an just playing with. Don't want to put too much money into it right now if I don't have to. Opinions please. Thanks in advance,

Joe: Hi. While I realize that you have removed the valve cover, I would recommend doing both a compression test and a radiator pressure test--especially the latter. You could do the rad pressure test both cold and hot. The cooling system is designed to work under pressure (4-7 lbs cap rating). Hook up a pressure tester to the radiator and pressurize to about 10-12+ lbs. and see if it drops and if so how fast. If the pressure tester looses pressure rapidly, try to see where it is being lost (radiator, hoses, head gasket, block crack). Keep us posted and good luck, David

Dave,
Thanks for your reply. Can't do a pressure test on the rad. have it out too! I have drained the crankcase and saved the oil in clean jugs to see if water would settle out. Found nothing, just oil. I suspect a head gasket but haven't compression tested yet. Have the rad in the shop for some soldering and a cleaning. The steering box is off I replaced the seals today on the arms.
When I reinstall the radiator and the steering (do that tomorrow) I'm gonna run her a bit and see what I find before going any further. I think I just got a little nervous. May be all right.

Joe: When you get things assembled again, do your pressure and compression checks cold, then again hot. If you do not have a radiator pressure tester, you can use an air compressor, with fittings and a pressure regulator (keep the pressure low). I think a cracked block is more likely to show up with a radiator pressure test than with a compression test. Either test could reveal a faulty head gasket (could be loose head bolts as well).
