23C - cylinder sleeve replacement?

Hi all, Have not posted in long time as my tractor has been running very well for me...until last night. While discing my garden, suddenly started blowing blue/grey smoke from the breather tube and drops of oil. Sounds like a classic case of a broken rings. (BTW '57 or '58 FE-35 w/23C Standard diesel)
I am looking at re-ringing it, and see there is a kit for replacing the cylinder liners as well. While I have rebuilt gas engines before, this is my first diesel experience, and first replaceable sleeve experience.
Would anyone be willing to give me some basic pointers so far as sleeve replacement? ie: how to pull them/insert and lock them in? Also, can it be done with the engine in? Also, as the unit gets relatively light use, procedure for breaking in the 'new'liners?

Love the posts and wealth of information here! Thanks in advance for information and best wishes to all.

Mike

Hi Mike.

Yes I have one - 59 FE 35 w/ Standard 23 C.

Want another one?

I bought a Ford 3000 (to rebuild) in January, haven't got around to selling the 35 yet.

If you feel like driving to Kitchener, I'll lend you my manual to rebuild the 23C.

Brian

Hi Brian, I work in Kitchener, so am around there almost every day. I would love to borrow the manual, but unfortunately a second 35 is not in the plans right now. If you want to send me a private e-mail (box in lower right corner) then we can get in touch and meet-up.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi there Brian,

I am in Mount Vernon, between Brantford and Burford Ontario, just of #53 highway. Your e-mail is blocked, so hope you see this.

Do you have one of these beasts yourself?

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks to you both for your replies! I am looking forward to getting this done, and in fact ordered the parts today.

Is there any secret to removing the liners? Are they keyed, press fit, screwed in, etc? I want to have any special tools/materials available for the job before I find out I need them.

Thanks again,

Mike

Head off, sump off, pistons will come out through top, liners will come out of there as well. all very straightforward. Don't waste your time with rings, they seldom work, fit pistons and liners and be sure. Run the engine in a lower gear until they bed in then you can gradually open up after 100 hours. No need to remove the engine...John

I got a new Irish (Moffitt) fork lift in the early '90s.

The break-in instructions for the Lister-Petter diesel in that unit suggested a 25 hour break-in with straight non-detergent 30 wt oil.

Made sense to me, because the higher friction from the lower grade oil would seat the rings more quickly.

It seemed to work - the unit still burns no oil after 2000 hours or so.

I've tried it on a couple of Perkins overhauls, but can't say there's a marked difference from normal oils during break-in.
