hey guys I am helping out my BIL, to sell his tractor, I got it up to my place, and it has water in the oil,, I also see a crack in the head between the spark plugs,, this is probably where the head gasket is cracked,, or the area letting the water in the oil??
third party image

I have a good head that I will throw in with the sale of the tractor,, do you think 1500 is a fair price,, it starts great runs great, hydro is fast. . tires are pretty good, tin isnt the greatest, but not the worst I have seen either, front hood is pushed in, but grille looks ok,,

third party image I dont want to change out the head ,, do you think I can sell it for that on ebay or here?? thanks pat

If you are getting water in the oil I would bet 10 to 1 that you also have a cracked block, I have seen it happen a bunch and have fixed a lot of em after they have been cracked. The head gasket usually will not let water in the oil on these engines.

Just out of curiosity, what method did you use to repair cracked Z Series Continental blocks? I had an old Z129 that had tension rods between the cylinders and when I replaced it, I bought a rmanufactured engine that had been furnace brazed.

I would grind the block on the bottom side between each cylinder and up the sides of the cylinder where the O'rings seat. Then I would heat the block overnight and weld it with a 97% nickel rod and then grind the welds back down where the O'rings seat. I have fixed about 35 of the Z120,Z129 and Z134 blocks without any trouble afterwards.

Do you have any idea how hot the block was when you started your weld? Jim

Thanks for the reply. Now there are three different methods of block repair that I am aware of.

yea I was kinda thinkin the same thing,, but thought maybe when it froze it "may"? have expanded enuff to push up on gasket?? maybe not, I know I have too many projects going to get involved in this one, I did list it on ebay at 1200,, hopefully someone needs it at that price..

man sales of small tractor s went south didnt they? I remember a few yrs ago buying some in decent shape at 2500 all day long ,, now its hard to get 18+ out of something in great shape,,[not that this is one of those haha]
thanks pat

That crack will let coolant leak to the outside of the head between the plugs but I don"t see how it could leak into the crankcase unless there are additional cracks somewhere else. As Jim said, it looks like freeze damage so I think there may be more freeze damage elsewhere or a blown head gasket causing the coolant to leak into the crankcase.

Looks to me like freeze damage... hopefully that is all there is, but I would be concerned that the damage goes much deeper... Don't want to rain on your parade, but 1500 sounds optimistic to me, in this condition... Jim in OH

I think 1500 is a good asking price with the extra head. That crack looks like it may be superficial to me, maybe not what's causing the problem. It seems that if it was all the way through something would be coming out of it. Just my thoughts.
