My oil light does not come on when the tractor is cold, but shows at idl when it gets warmed up. I shows at increasing rpm"s as the tractor gets warmer - I shut it down then. Plenty of oil in engine. I changed the oil and filter but did not fix. Next I guess I will change the oil pressure sending switch. Do not have a oil pressure guage to test, but what should the pressure be? Hope it is not the pump. Any suggestions. tractor has 1,000 hrs.

I am old school, so I prefer direct connect oil and coolant gauges.

I would hook up a direct connect oil gauge to the tractor just to be sure you have the correct oil pressure.

Lose of oil pressure will kill a engine faster than anything, second is lack of coolant.

Good luck and be safe,

Idiot light goes off at preset switch pressure. If new item does not fix, turn up the idle speed slightly and/or go to a thicker oil.

Thanks for the info. I think I will try and find a new pressure switch and see if that helps. I am currently using Delco 400 heavy duty 15/40 oil. Could I go heavier than that on the upper end? What concerns me is the light coming on at higher rpms when it gets good and warm. May still be the switch. It never used to do that.

Switching to a heavier oil to get the desired pressure is really kind-of false satisfaction. Generally, oil flow is more important than pressure. You should stick with the right oil. 15W40 is a good oil. If your sending unit does not fix the problem, you may want to consider pulling the oil pump to rebuild. Check the oil relief valve also, it may be worn and relieving pre-maturely.
