Roger,
I had the same problem 20 years ago. After switching to 12 volt I broke 3 starter snouts in probably a 1 year period. I switched back to 6 volts, had the generator rebuilt and new voltage regulator. No problems since then. If everything is working right a 6 volt will work just as good as a 12 volt on these tractors. Like Mr. Dell on the N forum says: clean, tight, bright and battery cables thick as your thumb. Of course if you are wanting 12 volt lights or other accessories thats a different story.

The starter has to be set to the flywheel or this can happen, I have the dimensions if you need them, you will have to email me so I have an address to send them to. I have also heard of this happening when they have switched over to 12v and it was never really resolved. You need something like the washer that has been mentioned, that will cushion the Bendix as it flies onto the teeth of the Flywheel, something to soften the landing as it hit the starter nose casting...John

If I recall correctly there is a small spring washer that goes between the starter drive and the bushing in the "snout" to reduce the impact load when the gear spins out. Also, the snout may be incorrect and press against the bell housing when you tighten it down. To find out if there is interference with the bell housing try gluing together one of the broken snouts and see if it (without the starter motor or drive) contacts the bellhousing. If it does, find out how much it needs to move (if you replace with an identical snout) or be sure the new replacement is clear. I got my new snout from an eBay store named Tridiode but you need to be sure your starter is stock or it can get confusing.
