Hi all, Does anyone have any experience with the electronic conversion kits listed on this site? I need to replace points and condenser and am thinking perhaps this is a good time to upgrade if the electronic conversion kits are really that much better. I'd appreciate any input. Thanks in advance. Steve

Steve, yes the electronic ingition upgrade is dandy. I've not heard a complaint from anyone that has converted. Call me old fashined though, there is nothing wrong with the old points & condenser system. My tractor is as reliable, easy starting, and smooth running 6V tractor as any out there, and it has 2 year old points/condenser in it now. Judging from the condition of the points they probably could go another 2 years... well a year for sure, and my TO gets quite a workout around here. I clean and adjust the points every Spring whether they need it or not. Takes 10-15 minutes and is just part of the joy of owning some old iron. The TO points are EASY to work on, not like an old N I had that had a front mount distrib. that was a PITA to adjust the point gap... that one deserved an electronic ignit. upgrade.
In the end it's your $$ to spend as you like, you can't really go wrong with the upgrade, BUT, it also won't fix a poor running condition due to some underlying cause like corroded connections, carb problem, timing problem, valve problem, etc.

I have Pertronix Igniters in both my 1953 Ferguson TEA20 tractor and 1966 Series I Jaguar XKE/E Type (6 cylinder DOHC engine), both of which previously had Lucas ignition. I think John (UK) first put me onto Pertronix a few years ago.

The frustrating days of dirty/closed points, faulty condensers, cleaning, gapping or changing spark plugs, poor starting etc are now only a dim, distant memory!! :D Both the Fergy and the Jag fire and start in one revolution!

Takes less than 15 minutes to install the units. They come with full instructions. If you have a TEA20, the Pertronix Part No is LU-145. Happy to email the Instruction Sheet if that would help.

I recommend you also buy the Pertronix (or similar) high voltage coil, 40,000 volts output compared to a normal automotive coil output of 15,000 volts. You could also experiment with wider spark plug gaps for more complete combustion.

A word of warning - the Pertronix Igniter is polarity sensitive, they come as either positive earth or negative earth - reverse polarity at your peril as it will probably fry the unit.

Best investment I ever made in the Old Girls!!!

Steve great timing there are several posts on this page talking about that very subject. I think this site sells Petronix and that is what most of the guys prefer. From what I can tell anyone who changed to elec. Ign. really like them. Good luck reading. Richard
