My father had the starter rebuilt. And I think that is when the alternator started going bad. I have put 4 new ones on.

A bad ground will cause a voltage drop that will wear out an alternator very quickly. Have you checked the condition of your battery cables? A battery that is on its way out with dead or weak cells will do the same thing. Do you ever have to jump start the tractor? Both of these conditions can be mild enough that the the tractor seems to run normally yet only because the alternator is running full field constantly.

Take the old Alternator to an Auto-electrician and let him have a look, he should be able to tell you what is causing it, you can't keep fitting Alternators like that. Apart from wiring there is very little to go wrong. Is there any doubt about the wiring, if you need a wiring diagram email me at fergusontractors@tiscali.co.uk
give me the details of the tractor and I will send it to you....John

That's great. Thank You. It is a 165 Massey Ferguson, Perkins Diesel , serial # 9 A 38343. The wiring diagram would be greatly appreciated.

No relationship between the starter and alternator that I can see. What alternator problems are you getting? You sure the tractor is correctly connected negative earth?
