Clutch and oil filter questions on TO-20

Rear main seal was leaking and thought that was making the clutch hard to engage smoothly. Split the tractor and found the clutch disc dry and in good shape. It's a solid disc with no damping springs. Does anyone in fergie land have any ideas to make this clutch a little more user friendly? Also while the pan is off to remove the rear seal, I discovered the spring was missing above the filter cover (seems to be a common problem) and know have one ordered from the dealer. In the parts book it shows two felt washers, #52 and #56 (one's a little smaller diameter and thinner than the other according to the parts book). Am I to assume that these felt washers go between the filter cover and screen?

A friend is also working on his Ford 9N in the same shop and has his tractor completly apart too. He is replacing the clutch and his disc with dampining springs is in good shape. In reading the Ferguson manual, it sounds like his disc will fit and work in my TO-20 utilizing the same pressure plate. The manual states that a different clutch petal may be required to obtain full release. I"m thinking that his clutch disc with a little wear will work well in my tractor. Further inspection of the oil filter cover shows some staining where the felt washers were positioned between the strainer and the cover. It appears the larger felt washer goes on the filter supply tube and the smaller one goes on the suction line.

that may explain why my to20 and te20 are different. the to20 takes off smooth and you can let it grab real gradual. the te20 grabs almost instantaneous and is hard to ease up to something. i have never had either apart but they are definitely different acting.

Chuck, the TO-20 clutch should have springs between the clutch cover (the part that bolts to the flywheel), and the clutch disk, which is indeed a solid disk plate. Yours might be covered with gunk making it hard to see the springs that are sandwiched between those parts. I know mine were when I took it apart. If your clutch is grabby, check for flywheel for even wear, spray about a can of brake cleaner between the clutch cover and flywheel to clean out the gunk real good, and/or remove the clutch disk to get at the springs better, and make sure you re-torque the clutch onto the flywheel per the manual. If your clutch disk looks to be worn uneven, they sell new ones here, don't cost too much.

The oil filter spring does indeed go above the tin can looking filter cover. I can not say with certainty on the felt washers, my TO didn't have felt washers & I never bothered to install them. But, I would assume they are intended to prevent particulates from getting into the filtered oil thru the holes for the oil suction and oil return line. So, yes, they probably go between the strainer and the tin can cover.

chuck,listen I rebuilt clutch discs for going on 28 years here in jacksonville,fla,the ford n series,and jubilees,and 600 series,along with the to-20,and 30 carried the same configuration,some had springs,some had solid carriers.It was all according to what the people wanted.A solid plate would give more bite,a spring loaded would give a smoother take off,but they are both 9 in. with a 1 38 in. spline,6 spline(teeth).
