Hello friends,
I should have prepared myself for this. The first nice day in quite awhile to do some plowing and the starter on my Continental gas powered TO35 has called it quits. I have a full 12.48 volts going into it and nothing happens. I'm thinking the brushes are worn out, I'll be taking it off tomorrow morning. Any ideas on what I should check, or other advice? Thanks, Lance.

Good morning Lance,
I have a TO-20 that I had to replace the starter on myself, most every thing was warn-out but the main thing that was wrong was where the cable bolt solders on to the windings (inside) was broke loose. I tried to re-solder worked for awhile but broke loose again, might check that too.

You could try rapping it briskly with a dead blow hammer. I have one that requires that occasionally. I think the brushes aren't seated exactly right and a quick pop with a non metallic hammer always gets mine going, so far. Don't hit the case sharply with a steel hammer, however, although a tap is probably ok.

I take it you measured the voltage at the starter connection and if that"s so, what I would do next is make sure you have a good ground. Clamp a jumper cable ro a good ground on the tractor and also on the starter attach bolt and try to start it. If you don"t the starter to turn, loosen the the attach bolts and jiggle the starter to make sure the drive is not caught in the ring gear. if that doesn"t work, take the bad off the starter and look at the brushes and the commutator. If the brushes are worn or the commutator is really dirty, it needs to be worked on. New brushes are cheap but I"d also check the bushings in the nose piece and in the back of the housing. If you don"t want to do that your self, take it in to an auto electric shop or an parts store and have them test it for you and see what it costs to rebuild it.

Thanks fellas. I've already tried the gentle taps with a deadblow. I'll try the jumper cable ground test tomorrow and see what happens, then take the starter off the tractor and decide what to do next. I've already located a reputable starter and alternator shop near my work, I'll probably run it over there and see what they think.
