Hello everyone. A few weeks I posted a question about an overhaul concerning whether new sleeves were essential. I thank you for all the info I recieved . It was very helpful. Now one more question before I tear it down..... .A very short while before my excessive smoke and oil consumption problem started, I replaced 2 or3 very worn out rocker arms. At the same time I added an outside oil line from the block to the head to get oil to the rockers. I have run it with the VC off and it appears that the rearmost rockers are flooding terribly. Its hard to tell about the front ones, if they are oiling properly or just covered with "splash" oil.. I know for sure that the stem seals are all bad. I wonder if I disoriented the shaft and rockers when I had that apart. Is there a diagram that will show or could someone explain it to me? I am pretty certain that is will be like my old Ford cars, in that the rockers must be in a certain position in regard to the holes in the shaft. Anyone have any ideas to offer? Thanks, RonW

We didn't use the valve oil seals here in the UK in service, but I don't know if they did in the USA, however if the valve guides are good and not worn there should be little need for the seals. Piping it up like you have done is because the original feed line is blocked or severely restricted in the Head or the Block above the Rear Camshaft bearing, this is usually due to the oil not being changed often enough. You need to restrict the flow from the Block to the Valve Gear as it is allowing too much oil to the top,it also drops the pressure available to the rest of the engine too, when it is piped correctly it is restricted so you don't have your problem....John

Thanks John and the hole...................... in reply to John(UK), 03-30-2008 03:38:52
above the cam bearing is definately clogged hard. That is why I ran the outside line. It is quite small, but I do not remember what size. The rockers were running bone dry before that. The old tractor is very worn, I;m sure to include the guides. What is the proper procedure for me run the proper amount of oil to the rocker shaft? Thanks again, RonWW

Apart from removing the Head and clearing out the gallery back to the Camshaft...and you may have to remove that to complete the work, what you have done is fine for now, just find some way of restricting the flow to the Rocker shaft so that it will be more like it was originally and then you shouldn't have the problem of over lubrication, just squeezing the pipe may do it, (very crude but if it works) or if there is room in any of the pipe fittings that you could insert a washer with a small hole that will limit the flow.Have you checked that the Rocker shaft is clear right the way through and that all the other rockers have the lube hole clear so the oil will pass through. The holes that lube the rockers in the Rocker Shaft and in the rockers themselves are very small so they will need to be checked just to make sure they are clear. If they have been running dry like you say then it is highly likely that they will be blocked...John

Thanks John. I will disassemble the rockers and clean them. Will also find a way to restrict the flow to the top. As always, I appreciate your help. RonW
