Okay, curiousity got the best of me and put the ol' TO30 back together and she fired up with a jump.
I bought this as a parts tractor, so the previous owner had the safety starter switch pulled and mounted to the side of the battery tray. So the button was facing out to be pushed to start.
She is 6 volts and I robbed my 00' cables off my 35 tried get her to fire. Very slow turn over.
**I noticed that the one side of the starter botton that comes off of the Neg.(hot) side of battery got very! hot. I cleaned connections and ran dedicated ground (pos) to starter bolt.
Do these switches go bad?-will it cause heat?
Secondly,-I wondered why it was pulled from tranny. When I looked inside square hole with mirror AND my fingers--I could see NO mechanical part that moves over to safety switch when I moved the shifter to the "S" position.
Is there a removable part that should be there.?
OBVIOUSLY, something pushes the button when it is mounted correctly.? THanks fellas.
Mark

I just recently bought a TO 30 that would not start. The previous owner had tried everything, and decided to just get rid of it. I paid scrap price for the entire tractor, put a 14 dollar starter switch on it, and it is the best running tractor out of the 14 that I own. The upside down switch that the shift lever pushes on went bad. So Yes they do go bad.

Mark,
On my machine the shift rail had been cut off and a plug put in the seal hole. I was able to find a good used tranny with a few other parts I could use and an intact shift rail. The picture shows the linkage that is supposed to be there.

NOW thats what I'm talkin' about.
I do much better with Pics. Ha Ha
I think my "button" is original as the plate it came off of is in the tool box. BUT, the pivoting part that will push the botton is NOT on the plate. Could that be on the push rod dangling?
When you remove your switch, does the pivot portion AND the button switch come off as ONE piece?
I may have to look for the pivot AND the rod.
I hope its just hanging...I doubt it. Not my style to be lucky.
I appreciate the PIC>
Did you go through the thrust bearing and shim ordeal on your 30?. Sounds a little like a pain, but I love tearing into things and learning.
Regards, Mark

I think you still may be a little bit confused. As Jerry said, the original switch DOES have a push button on it. The rod pushes a lever which then pushes against the button. It is possible that the switch you have mounted externally could be the original switch. Maybe not, maybe so. Without a picture, hard to tell from the description so far. Those switches do go bad, as mentioned, and other push button styles that do the same thing and mount externally are more available, so it is likely what you have is not the original, but it could be.

Those switches have the same problem as the starter solenoid contacts do. They arc and get a deposit on them and then the resistance gets high. You"re trying to pass ~ 50-60 amps(@6V) to the starter through that switch so if it has much resistance it"ll get hot.

As Marlowe said, there should be a rail that the shift lever moves forward to push on an L shaped link that pivots and presses the button at the bottom of the switch.

I feel kind of stupid..... ..but, the present switch is a push button starter switch that someone installed to bypass the safety switch. It is this pushbutton switch that is getting hot. So, I will look for the correct safety and not concern myself with the heat problem as I am going to remove it.
I was thinking that the push button went down into the compartment and a shift rail went up and pushed it.
Similar to the ball-type on the 35's.
So I actually have a BAD-WRONG switch..hmm.
Now to address the slow turnover and weak spark.
All for parts tractor I just wanted to "tinker" with. This tractor stuff is a DESEASE!!!
THanks to all.

It"s getting hot because it isn"t designed for the starter current or, if it is, it has a high resistance for several different reasons. heat is an indication of high resistance.

Okay, now I get it.....I thought the one mounted on the side of battery tray WAS the original, just mounted backwards...but the original does NOT have a button to push, but something activated by a push rod.
I'll bet the pushrod is still hanging if I look hard enough.
Thanks.

the switch will and dose go bad should be a push rod in the bell housing to make the switch work
