I am working on a 30 tune up. after points, plugs and a carb cleaning the only way to keep it running is with the choke held all the way out! Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

One cause of your problem is not enough fuel, as others said. Another cause could be too much air. Look for a leak.

So if the fuel is getting to the float chamber, choking says you need more by opening the main jet. The initial settings in the book are just close enough to get to run good enough you can adjust it properly. Its not factory preset.

The float setting is very important, have had to reset float a couple times to get it right. also did you clean out the secondary screen in the carb elbow. It's the brass elbow that attaches to the carb. Maybe you loosened up enough stuff to clog it up. good luck

thanks, the float is perfectly level.I would say one fourth inch from the top of carb housing. Although I don't know if that is the correct mearsurement for this carb

The float setting on the M-S carb is very crucial. How are you measuring the float level? The correct way is to invert the upper part of the carb and the highest edge of the "top" part of the float(while you have it upside down,it"s the bottom edge)should be 9/32" above the gasket surface. Hope this makes sense. Make sure that you placed the gasket at the interface of the carb and the intake manifold and that the connection is leak proof. It sounds like you are running too lean. Your initial main jet adjustmet should be out about 1-1/8 turns and the initial idle air should be 3/4 turn out. Remember the idle mixture screw adjusts air not fuel so that screwing in inward enriches the mixture.

Wade-

First of all, I'm not an expert in anything, especially tractor mechanics. But, for what it's worth, you may want to check the timing. When I got my TO-30, it would only run (and it seemed to run great)with the choke fully on. Upon investigating, my timing was way off. After re-timing the engine, the tractor ran as it should with the choke in the correct position. Just a suggestion. Good luck, and let us know what you find out.
