Hello everyone. Yesterday I went to a farm machinery auction with Dad. Most of the stuff was out of my price range, however there was a rough but complete TO35 there. The engine would turn over ok but not fast enough to start due to a weak battery. It ended up going for 625, a bit high for a no-start tractor, but then again it was pretty cold and a new battery may have been the only thing it needed to start. I watched some of the other tractors run and noticed a curious engine condition on a circa 1970's diesel powered John Deere. The tractor was idling as the auction was going on and I noticed the crankcase vent tube was smoking or releasing vapour just like a little tailpipe. Not just a little puff here and there, but really thick like an exhaust pipe. The tractor was warmed up, I know it ran for more than an hour. Now, this tells me that the engine had alot of blowby likely due to bad rings. Does this sound plausible? I know diesels have more blowby than gas engines due to much higher compression, but I've never seen our diesel powered MF165 or Ford 5610 do this. I don't think this is a John Deere question, but a general diesel question. Any opinions? Lance

The TO35 was a buy a $650 if the tires and sheet metal were ok.

Not looking for a dollar then, the type of machines they don't start..surprised they ran it for so long.usually someone with a cloth wiping the oil off chassis.

Yous just haven"t seen a wornout MF or Ford, Lance. But you are very observant and you nailed the problem with that engine!
All engines will have a lot of blowby if they are worn. All of them use rings for sealing and they have similar compression ratios so when they wear they will exhibit similar characteristics. The real question to ask is how many hours of use will it take to get to the point that they have excess blowby? That depends how they are used and how they are maintained more than by what color paint is on them.

Thanks for the reply Jerry. When I worked as a car mechanic I often encountered engines which burned oil via crankcase pressure pushing it through the pcv valve into the manifold. Happily, my TO35 doesn"t lose a bit of oil. Have a good one, Lance.
