The original subject was "Re: TO20 Main Bearing Cap Seal".

I took a about 2 feet of 3/16" cotton sash cord and stuffed it in the grooves. As I stuffed in the groove, I coated it good with Black Hi-Temp RTV. I used a long thin screwdriver to poke it down the groove and then, when about all I could get in, I used a small punch about the diameter of the groove/hole and hammered it down; then finishing filling and pounding. Each groove held about 1 foot of the cord. Some RTV came out all along the edge of the bearing cap. No doubt about this sealing forever.

I'm glad you did this before me! However my desire is to use the oil resistant Gray RTV that can be typically found on oil pans and such.

What then is the hi-temp Black RTV? Seems that most engine RTV would be oil-resistant. I used the standard automotive type and not household. I have the Red stuff also.

are you talking about ultra black? If not it will be fine beacuse any old RTV pretty much does the same thing

Changed my mind in reply to eeeeeeeeeeeeeee, 01-20-2008 05:40:50
Pulled out the new string and looked at it. Hmmm...RTV dries up and while it may seal who knows how long it will last. Another 50 years? Expansion when heating up and contractions when cooling. Maybe, maybe not. Now what? Look backwards to see forwards might help sometime. Got the wife to hold the string out and coated it with Permatex #2. Stuffed about 2" into each hole. My thinking is that oil on permatex will expand it and keep it swollen in place. RTV unfortunately does not expand.
