The 2-stage clutch was first offered on the TO-35... from 1955. It was an upgrade option thus not all TO-35's will have it.

The 2-stage clutch was not offered on the TO-20's nor the TO-30's.

All models after the TO-35 had the 2-stage clutch as an option or standard. Thus, the F-40... MF-50, -65, -35, -135, -150, -165 etc. all would have the 2 stage clutch available.

If the tractor has the 2-stage clutch the Data Plate will have the Letter "M" in the third position... i.e. SGM 656565.

THe letter codes tell you the tractor's "Chassie type", Engine Type" and "Clutch Type"

It was first offered on the TO35.
My green and grey 1955 has it.
These were known as the Deluxe models.
pan seat, tach, two-stage clutch.
I also have a couple 35's without live p.t.o.
--don't use em for much more that pulling wagons.
Any work requiring the p.t.o is TONS better with live p.t.o.
Mowing, blade work, tilling, boom work, etc.
It's a pain in the fanny to put tractor in neutral and raise clutch just to work hydraulics.
Just ask EVERY other tractor manufacturer if live p.t.o. is a good idea.
Mark

I believe the live/2 stage clutch did not come out until the TO35s meaning the 20 and 30 never had it. I would imagine it continued through the 40 and eventually MF designation. I also believe that not all the 35s had it, only the Deluxe models which were not identified by name plate until 57?? there are no markings on the 55s to know if they were deluxe or not, have to determine that by gauge offering (tractormeter), improved seat (backrest) etc.

From what I gather, the "LiveDrive" clutch was first offered as an option on later production TO35's. My 1955 model does not have it and neither did the previous 20 and 30 series tractors. My family's 1970 MF165 has the Livedrive clutch, we have had it since new with no problems. Apparently the system works very well because MF still uses it today.
