This is my first post to the Fergie Forum. I have been reading the posts here for over a year and very much appreciate all the help you've all provided when you didn't even know it. Alas, now I've encountered something that I haven't found on the forum anywhere. I have a 1956 TO 35 with a Davis Loader. The tractor works fine, but bushings are nearly gone around the axle pivot pin. I would like to replace the pin and bushing, and already have the replacement parts. I would also really like to replace it while everything is still on the tractor. I have been working on this for 3 days now and I haven't been able to move the pin at all. I've tried heating with a torch and hammering on the casting. I made a puller, of sorts, with a long piece of 3/4" threaded rod but I'm afraid of putting too much pull on the rod for fear of breaking the castings that hold the pin. It seems as though the pin has rusted itself to the casting and its almost as though they're on piece of iron at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can, if I must, take the front axle support off the tractor but I feel there should be a way to get this pin out without so much dismantling. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I did pivot pin on my 135, pin had just started to wear into the axle, had a solid pin that would not move, finally unbolted the casting and dropped it, casting was pretty stout

BIL held my biggest punch with vise grips while I wailed on punch with 5lb then 8lb maul, finally got it to budge .001 and rest was simple

IDEAS:
make triple sure that the locking devise is out

make sure weight is off the casting and axle can wiggle, pin might be sitting in a groove

if you have a hollow pin, suggest heating inside of pin and then letting it cool several times, expansion/contraction sometimes works pin loose

use lots of PB Blaster or your favorite brand of panther pee, I have read about putting bees wax on the join after getting it hot, wax supposed to draw into the joint, never had to try it

after you get it out, put anti-seize on new pin my new one was hollow and slid in with finger pressure

please keep us posted

Supergrumpy, you asked me to keep you posted, so here is my result. I have the new pin and bushing in place. What a job. It took me a week working every evening to remove the old one. I was using my custom-made puller. I would tighten the 1-1/8" nut on the puller about a quarter turn. Then tap on the front and back boss on the castings. It took three days of soaking with Kroil and tapping on the casting. I was thinking that once I got it to move a little bit, the rest would be easy. That was wrong. I went about .003" at a time until the pin was completely out of the back half of the cast support. That rate takes a long time to cover an inch. After it was out of the back boss, I was able to do about 1/16" at a time for the remainging 6 inches. Anyway, the pin was out and re-assembly wasn't much easier. Apparently the new pin was slightly oversize in diameter. It wouldn't press through the bushing with a hydraulic press in our machine shop at work. I used a cylinder to enlarge the bushing. That took a while, but it worked. Then I also had to slightly enlarge the bores in the casting. Finally, it's all back together and working great. It was a 9-day project, but the front is so much tighter now. It was very much a needed repair.
Thanks for the advice.

you earned your salt

now that I think of it, I think I hammered the old pin back/forth a bit to work the PB into the join

my new pin slid in, I think your tractor is a lot bigger, might account for the difference

at least you are set for another 2 years or so
