I have a to 35 that sat for years and had alot of moisture in the rear end.Drained and added 90 wt.oil.Lifts will only go up slowly if motor is revving very high, but no holding power. Before I changed oil,the lifts would go up as soon as I started the tractor no matter where the position lever was at and the lifts would lift alot of weight. What do I need to do?Could there be alot of gunk left in the rear end?Help please!

I have a 1957 TO35, I would drain whatever oil you put in it out and replace the oil with the correct oil. Remember you are lubing trans and lift system. You will be told by 8 of 10 people that you can use most any tranmission/hyd oil that says MF, on this forum I havs seen people say they run motor oil in trans of these little fergs.

Not true on these old tractors, they require 90 weight mineral oil, not cheap. They have brass bearings inside transmission and the newer oils will not properly lube those type bearings. New tractors do not use these type bearings.

If you change oil and get things to working properly, I have added 1/2 qt Lucas transmission oil to system.
The lift system on my tractor will still pick front of tractor off ground after 50 years of service.

Remember, good oil is cheaper than parts and it needs to be changed ever few years.

Good Luck,

As others said, don"t use 90 wt. GL-3 or GL-5. The manual correct oil is mineral oil, or what is now called GL-1, not available everywhere, but NAPA and TSC have it if you look (and ask). Having said that, GL-1 is fairly thick itself, and could be the cause of your slow lifting if you are in a cold climate, especially this time of year. You can use regular motor oil, 15-40, or some such, which is a little thinner and works fine, especially in cold conditions. The TO-35 takes 8 gallons, unlike the TO-30 which only takes 6 gallons, but it"s the same stuff. When you drain, make sure you get it all. You can reach inside and pull some gunk out, and it takes hours to completely drain. When you fill, there is a baffle which keeps the level from being correct until the tractor is moved and the fluid has settled, so don"t be too quick to add more. You can drive it up and down a hill or two to make the process faster. As Jerry said you may have a leak causing the lift to drop, or it could be the relief valve. That seems like a separate issue to me, but it is curious that both occurred when you put in new fluid. I hate to suggest you change the fluid again just to check for the leak down problem, as the fluid is expensive, hard to dispose of, and not evironmentally friendly, but that might be the overall best approach given the circumstances, and depending on how cold it is where you are.

The correct oil for the tractor is 90W GL-1. Its is not 90W gear oil, Gl-3 or GL5 oil. What kind of oil did you add? I"m more familiar with the lift system on the TO-20/-30 and I think the -35 is a bit different. If your lift raises imediately on start up no matter what the position of the lift lever, you control valve is most likely stuck in the raise position.

If it won"t stay up with some weight on it, I"d suspect the lift cylinder is leaking. Open the side access plate and with the engine running and the pump engaged, and the lift all the way up with some weight on it,l ook up at the lift cylinder. (DO NOT PUT YOU HANDS IN THE COMPARTENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!) If there is more than a few drops dripping down from the lift cylinder, the seals or the cylinder itself is bad.

Hi,

I am new here too, but what I have read, you should use the same weight oil in the trans/hydraulic system as you do in the engine. So perhaps your gear oil of 90wt is too thick.
