Hi, my name is Jay, and I am from Wisconsin, I have recently hauled my grandfathers old TO-20 home and am doing some work to it. I got it running now, after dropping in a different distributor off of EBay. My plan is to slowly start updating things, and eventually when I have time, strip it all down to be re-painted. First problem I have is with the 6V electrical system, I have no problem using the 6V, but it is currently hooked up as a negative ground, and from everything I have read it is supposed to be positive ground. (may have been an oversight on my dad's part) What steps do I need to follow in order to correct this. The way it is, it does not seem as though the generator is charging the battery, it however does run fine. The other item that I am interested in is the position control bracket posted by Jim(OH). I am by trade a draftsman, and used to be a metal fabricator. This looks like a very simple part to make, but I have no idea how it works, any ideas?

Welcome to the gang, we are a mostly friendly group with a addition to Fergy's. There was a drawing of the position control in the FENA newsletter a year ago or so. Maybe some one could run a copy for you. I'll look for it then get your address. good luck on your fergy and Merry Christmas to All.

Thank you everybody for all of your help, I will definitely do what jerry suggested, and put everybody's advice to use. I plan to strip all wiring and run new wiring and connectors everywhere. (1 at a time of course, so I don't completely screw it up) Thanks again for the prompt replies!

JB... It is Jeff (OH) that has the drawings for the pposition control device.. and if I remember correctly, he will email them to you if you ask.. You can probably find small versions in the archives, but they are too small to read... He frequents the forum, so I am sure he will be along soon or find one of his posts with the email activated and send him a message... Jim

Your 6V maybe positive or negative ground since you charging system is driven by a generator (the OEM configuration was a positive ground) HOWEVER, you must polarize the generator to a negative ground AND you must switch the polarity on the coil so that the wire from the coil to the distributor in the PRIMARY CIRCUIT (the small wire) must be on the negative coil terminal.
To polarize the generator to a positive supply (negative ground) using a jumper wire, briefly touch the the wire to the armature terminal on the generator and the positive terminal of the battery(this is for a negative ground system). You must do this before start up or you risk damging the voltage regulator.

The position device merely provides feedback of position of the rockshaft (and hence the 3 pt lift)to the control lever that will allow it to hold a set position. If the forces on the hitch try to drive it down, the control lever will be driven to raise the implement by the feedback linkage. It is nulled out at the set position. This device is required for certain implements becaus ethe TO-20 andd -30 do not have a built in position control. They only have draft control.

Jay, do as Jerry says above. Also check that all your wires are clean & shiny. 6V systems are very sensitive to corrosion. After I shine-up my connections and bolt them down, I apply a light coating of white grease to help keep them dry, they stay shiny a long time that way. While checking your connections, don't forget that big ground cable that bolts to the tractor frame, that whole transition needs to be clean & shiny. Finally, take a look at your voltage regulator. The regulator controls your generator output by varying the ground potential to the "F" terminal on the generator. If your regulator has a poor ground, your generator won't charge. The regulator ground is via one of the mounting bolts, you will see the thin copper band running from the regulator down to the mounting pad, that's it. Make sure that bolt is clean & shiny and that there is a good ground path back to your ground lug on the back of the tractor dash. Sometimes these old rusty tractors don't have good ground paths across the bolted-up mountings between the components any more. For added insurance, I ran a ground wire (like 14 gauge) from the mounting bolt on the regulator, up to the battery grounding lug on the dash to insure that regulator has a good ground.

Hi Jay! I am in the process of going through a TO-20 rear to front. Engine being the last thing because I don't want it rusting the cylinders while I am doing the rest of it. Everything gets greased, oiled or covered to keep the oxidation at bay. Your 6V should be neg ground for a better spark at the plugs. Off the top of my head I would say you might need to flash the regulator and get it back to correct polarity. Your genny is rated around 10 amps max output. My position control is the official "Zane Thang". Saved me the trouble and time of building one and I have enough to do with this project. I also got the windings to change my genny to 12V Pos.
