Rusty,
I think syth is great oil, however, the prime reason to use this oil is so you can go longer distance between oil changes.
example: in car 15-20k between oil changes.

Not a issue with your old tractor, you need to change the oil in your tractor at least once per year to get dirt and moisture out of crankcase. you are just draining that high dollar oil into a bucket.

Main issue is change the oil in a timely manner, no matter what oil you use,
remember old tractor is still running after 60 years on regular oil, did pretty good so far i would say. Just my 2 cents

Sincerely,

I would recommend that if you go the synthetic route, don't use the low viscosity oils that are for today's engines such as 5w20 or 0w30. These oils don't provide much "cushion" for worn bearing/journal clearances and will happily weep from worn crank seals. I would go with 10w40, 15w40, or 20w50. Let us know how it goes.

Cold weather starting... in reply to rusty nut, 12-09-2007 14:56:51
If you start the tractor in COLD weather, I'd say the synthetic oil is VERY good for your engine.

I use it during the winter in ALL my stuff, old and newer alike, and you can really tell the difference in cranking speed when it's below zero.

Bob... in CCCCCOLD northern ND, where it's been -25ºF, already.

Rusty,
synthetic a waste of money? No, cus" it shouldn"t hurt your engine. It might be a little overkill for a ~1950 engine, but it"s your TE to use the oil of your choice. I like K-Mo"s reply, " the best oil is clean oil"!

Good for the tractor? Don"t know, you tell us in about 10 years.

George

You will probably get a lot of opinions on oil. My opinion is the best oil is clean oil. I buy what ever oil is on sale but I don't mix oil brands. My '89 Chevy P/U has over 200,000 and my Buick over 150,000. Previously owned vehicles gone near 200,000 and still ran good when I traded them off.
Your '48 TE20 has run 60 years with many years of hard work. It will keep running for many more years whether you use synthetic or not.
Use what ever oil you feel comfortable with.

I use mobil 1 in my 2007 gmc I change it and if the dealer would change with just oil it would cost about the same.

I wouldn't think it was a waste.in my way of thinking, synthetic oil is the best oil on the market,so it would be the best for your tractor.I am no expert at this, but I have had some experience with the 'syntec'from 'castrol',that stuff works!I am building a '51 to-20,and it will get the 'syntec'in it.
