I have read thru pages of your discussion and am quite amazed at all the knowledge out there. I have a 49 TE 20. It has been running fine but recently will not run unless i start it from my truck and then it runs for about 1 minute then dies. if i keep touching booster cable to battery post when it starts to die it will go again for about another minute. Pulled off the generator and when running it with a cordless drill i get a few millivolts out of it. So i figure it is pooched. I pulled apart and clenaed up brushes but no change. I am in Canada and use it for my very large driveway snow removal. I have winter fast approaching and need to get this up and going. I think it is time to do the 12v conversion but with all my reading i have not found any wiring diagrams and what type of alternator people have been using. I did a search to 12v conversion kits but did not see any for my model. Sorry for being long winded but just wanted to get it all out at once. Any help here would be much appreciated.

Well my saga continues. I was able to get a alternator from a chevette and have it mounted just fine. I will say now that my tractor is positive ground. That kind of puts me at my next scenario. If i leave all wires from alternator off and take neg terminal of battery to the coil thru ignition switch i can get tractor to run just fine and starts instantly. I know i am running coil off of battery but just wanted to get that part of the conversion figured out. My question comes when i try and wire up the alternator. It has a terminal for "bat" and is marked red so i assume positive. The other 2 are marked "1"and "2" and also have "R"and "F" respectfully. according to some of the drawings i have you jump "2" to "bat" and then "1" goes to coil. I would have thought "F" means field and it goes to coil. All that being said i have tried all combinations and get nothing. I also cannot seem to read any voltage coming out of alternator either. Did i blow something inside alternator? Also since it is positve ground will it still charge battery but just up thru ground. Sorry for being so long winded but had to get it all out there.

I have 48 TE20 with 12vot system, alls you do is get an alternator,I think mine is a 10SI single wire, and a 12volt coil and battery,I did change my alternator to a 3 wire recently because it wasn't charging,it was real easy, went to the auto parts store bought a $4.00 dollar plastic connector,(not sure what it was really called)but it plugs into the alternator, there will be a rubber plug on top side of alternator, pop it off there are 2 prongs there the plastic conector pops on there oner wire runs directly to stud on back of alternator the other runs to ignition, put a diode in the wire running to ignition to keep it from discharging,me and my dad did this and it works excellent, now the alternator is charging battery at an idle, about the best thing we have done to the tractor.

Well, both the TE-20 and TO-20 uses the Continental engine. So it should be the same. The TEA-20 uses the Standard engine.
Good luck with the conversion.

Try this for a quick read through.

I have some diagrams and notes. Send me an e-mail -- mcaliron at yahoo dot com -- (make the obvious changes in the address) and I can send you copies. Your mount on a Standard engine may differ slightly from my Continental, but it is not brain surgery.
