Engine - to flush or not to flush ?

What are the opinions on using an engine flush to clean the inside of the engine on a TO 30? An Amsoil representative said their flush would work, no problem. I'm a little leery about breaking all the crud up and plugging the oil passages. But just thinking about what might be plugged already makes me want to try it. The general engine conditions are: it's a little noisy, doesn't burn oil, and has 50 lbs of oil pressure.

Thanks

Thanks for the comments. I had just replaced the rocker cover gasket and saw the crud inside and started wondering how to go about cleaning things up without making things worse.

Everyone, have a good week !

i use engine flush every time i change the oil in my vehicles. all i can tell you is that before i change the oil the color of the oil is a dark brown. after adding the flush and draining the oil in my drain pan is a dark black. it has to be dissolving something. i have never tried it in a vehicle which has not had the oil changed on a regular basis. i think that if you wanted to use a engine flush on a non changed engine you might want to do it twice in a row if the new oil turned dark immediately after the first change.

From a deer camp in Northeastern, WY:

Why do you think you need to flush the engine with an oil additive? What are you hoping to accomplish?.

I know my comments to this question will generate some controversy but I"ll risk it anyway. I seriously doubt that any oil additive used for flushing the lube system out will cause any problems to your engine. All the comments I have seen have been anecdotal("My uncle"s cousin used Acme Lube System Flush and the next day he lost oil pressure ans spun a bearing....").Most likely, he had low oil pressure and thought the flush might help. His lube system was about shot and was on it"s way to causing the problem but he happened to add the flush and had the failure so it" blamed on the flush. It"s not like there are oil passage sizes chunks of sludge in the engine waiting to clog the lube system. I have used them to try to free what I thought was stuck oil control rings on a tired, sludged, engine with no improvement in oil control and no harm to the lube system
I don"t know if there is any value to flushes but I doubt that it"s harmful. The sludges I have seen have been a greasey like substance that might cause the pick up screen to clog except thye are so sticky that they adhere to whatever they are on and are hard to scrape off let alone fall off in big globs. These flushes are likely just solvents that dissolve some of the sludge and do little more.
Using a good grade detergent oil and changing it regularly is the best thing you can do for your engine, in my opinion.

One problem you encounter with alot of aftermarket oil flush products is that they can help old, brittle oil seals to start leaking, or turn minor oil leaks into big ones. I'm with Jerry/MT on this one, change your oil regularly and be happy. If you feel the burning desire to flush, try this: at your next oil change, substitute one quart of Dexron ATF for one quart of oil, then change your oil again at about halfway through the normal interval. ATF is a fantastic internal cleaner and is alot safer to use because it is more viscous like motor oil, and less likely to help leaks to start or become worse.
