12 or 6 volt coil

I have just had a T0-20 passed on to me :]
The tractor had been rebuilt and converted t
12 volts 2 or three years ago. The existing 6 volt coil was bad so I replaced it with a
12 volt coil. The tractor now runs but is
lacking power. I tried to disconnect what I
think is a ballast resistor...but then the
tractor would not turn over, it would try to
turn over but acted like the battery was weak.

I hooked the "ballast resistor" back up and the
machine cranked over and started right up.

The thing I am calling a ballast resistor looks
like a little ceramic waffer with to leads
comming off of it. One lead hooks to the positive
terminal on the coil.

What's going on?

Should I have put in a 12 volt coil?

Any help much appreciated

Dave Richardson

If the 12 volt coil has two connections for low voltage try reversing the connections. Spark will not jump as well at the plug if it is backwards as one electrode of the plug is at a higher temp than the other.
