Engine vibration in a TO 30

I seem to remember my Dad's TO 30 idling with almost no vibration. The one I am restoring shakes enough to bounce a wrench right off the top of the front tire (where I seem to deposit many tools while working "under the hood". As with the manifold question I asked earlier, have I just forgotten how much vibration there is or should I consider pulling the engine apart and having the rotating parts balanced? Any idea how expensive this would be?

Thanks for the replies - much better now with the idle where it is supposed to be. It didn't occur to me that the crank doesn't have counterweights until you mentioned it. I guess it must be pretty close because it is really smooth at 1500 rpm (that is as high as my tach goes).

Don, saw your post the other day & wasn't sure what to think of it. These old mechanical lifter Continental engines don't run as smooth, or a quite, as a modern car engine. When I first got mine, I thought the engine sounded terrible, like it was rattling itself apart... I was running my TO last night & decided to investigate the "tool on the front tire" issue. At a slow idle, maybe 400 rpms, not too much vibration, but with my new ribbed 4X19 front tires, I can't get a tool to sit on them anyway, I had to use the front axle. Get up to ~1000 or so RPMs & I I'm sure no tool would sit on the tire or front axle for more than several seconds before vibrating off. I don't think you much to worry about. If your still unconvinced, you can check your timing, or replace 1 plug at a time to see if you have a weak sparker, or if your really energetic, pull the gas tank & check your valve tappet clearances.

Hi Don... I wouldn't say that the TO-30 is without vibration... It really is not a dynamically balanced engine.. it has no counter weights on the crankshaft and isn't any more balanced than the Model A Ford was.. However, at slow idle (at slow rpm.. just ticking over... ) this unbalance would not be felt and it should be as smooth as you remember... If it is vibrating like you describe, I'd be looking at un-even firing of the cylinders more than anything else.. this could be compression, ignition, carburetion.. compression issues could be rings, valves, etc...
