I am buying a TO30 that has had the steering column replaced by a salvaged TE20 steering column. The serial number is missing. Is there anyplace else on the tractor where I can find the serial # for this tractor?
Thanks,
Tom

If the original Z129 engine has its serial number on the engine plate, you can apprxomately determine the tractor serial number and year made. I prepared the graph (above) some time ago and posted (here) and the graph is of course also repeated above. If you subtract 240,000 from the engine number, you will be reasonably close to the original tractor serial number. Tractors were built sequentially, but the engines were installed only nominally sequentially as they were randomly selected from a batch of hundreds that were available on the floor.

I was hoping you would chime in. I could not remember if your chart was for the Z129 or the Z120. Thus I didn't bring it up but did have it in mind.

HI Jeff.. I wasn't sure I could find the post.. although the pic is hosted at one of my sites... and, if I could keep "above" and "below" straight, it would make more sense... seems there are differences in the preview and final, modern and classic, that I haven't figured out... Jim

No there is not. The serial number on the TO-30 doesn't mean all that much as I believe there were no any major changes during the production run. (I may be corrected on that).

The biggest thing it tells you is the year of manufacture. Nice to know but does not affect operabiltiy, or price... unless of course it was SN TO60000 or the last one made. etc.

The other was to get a relative year is by the motor serial number which is on a tag behind the plug wires.

There also may be a casting date code on the case under the left side steering column. Though I know these are on the TO-35's I do not think they are on the TO-30's. Someone else will need to clairify.

The only "reliable" casting date is supposed to be on the front of the Trumpet housing on the rear axle.(as it is fitted in the Tractor) Allow about 3 or 4 weeks from that date for when the Tractor was manufactured.I say "reliable" because we all know how wrong these can sometimes be...John
