TO20 - Governor Assembly Installation

I was having issues with my '51 TO20 and finally pinpointed the governor assembly. After removing the timing cover I found I was missing a few of the governor ball weights (found them in the oil pan). Now I can't figure out how to reinstall the governor assembly. I have the blue TO20 shop manual, but it does not offer much help. I can't figure out how the 2 plates hold the ball weights in place. It seems the ball weights will fall off since nothing holds the 2 plates together. Does anyone have a diagram, detailed instructions, or a picture that can help me?

By the way, this is a great site, lots of useful information!

Thanks in advance!

I have listed below the listing for a governor from this site (YTMAG) if you go to the top of the page and click on H.Ferguson and then parts you should get it. It doesn't list a TO20 here but a TO30 is just the same in the timing cover, and it is half the price of what you have been offered. I would think from your description that you should change the governor assy. or it could happen again.
Governor Assembly - For Continental engines in tractors: TO30, TO35, MF35, F40, MH50, MF50, MF150, 11 Pony, 202, 204, 2135, 2200, 2500. Also service as a unit tractors: MF135, MF150, with Perkins gas. Supersedes & replaces 1002849M91. (Part No: 529737M91) $92.07 [Enlarge Picture]

Thanks Dan, that makes sense. I really don't want to spend the $100 for this simple assembly, do you guys think I can fabricate something to hold the plates together? Or would I be better off spending the $$?

You could go to your salvage yard. Also, speaking of fabrication, the Case VAC used a very similar governor and there are thousands and thousands of them around. The 124 cu in engine was also designed by Continental. Late in 1949, the VAC changed to a very robust double-flyweight system hinged to the camshaft gear. As an engineering archeologist, I'd have to think they were seriously dissappointed with the ball- type governor. But maybe it was just a cost saver. I've worked with both versions, but haven't actually tried to move one to the Z120 engine. You could be the first!

I have not worked on one of these in the engine yet, but I have a new governor assembly in a box and the balls are held in by metal tabs and cant fall out. If the originals where also constructed this way, I would guess yours is worn allowing the balls to slip out.
