I am working on a Roto-Speed bushhog. Can anyone tell me why the output shaft keeps falling down and causing the shaft and the skid plate to wobble like crazy? This is the second set of bearing and race that i am putting in tommorrow.I cjust can't figure out what is causing the output shaft just to drop. Thanks in advance.

I don't fully understand what you are trying to say but if you mean the shaft that carries the Blade and the bearings on there. Very often the blades are out of balance and cause the mower to vibrate when in use, just like when you have a wheel out of balance on your car. When it vibrates ANYTHING can happen and very often does, so check the blade balance first and keep the blades sharp all the time it will be much easier for the Tractor to drive. Are you running the mower too fast, it should run at 540 rpm on the PTO, if it is on a Ferguson that is 3/4 throttle...John

Hey John(UK)

I hate to sound like a recording (hehe).I was looking at the gear box and was wondering if maybe 1 bearing is placed from the bottom and the other maybe being placed through the top of the gear box after the input shaft has been removed.I noticed a factory groove to where maybe the race knocks in on the underside portion of the gear box.Maybe that explains why the races and bearings are falling? If that is the case, then when i got the cutter,it came with the wrong bearings? If it is all wrong then now i will have to figure out what belongs in it. Pulling my hair out now.(hehe)

I am not familiar with your particular mower, but I would think that there must be a positive way to fasten the bearings in place or it will fail like before. You seem to have found the problem as you describe in this last post. Fitting the bearings, one from the top and one from the bottom seems sensible to me, you should try it. Doing it that way should positively fix the bearings in place and that should end your problem with it. The groove you mention, is it possible that there should be a circlip in there to hold the bearing in place?...John

The cutter i have is a Roto-Speed,Model is a Mowhawk.I was using it to cut some tall weeds and all of a sudden it started clacking and banging,so i brought it back to the house and looked and the shaft that holds the blade and skid plate was just hanging down. The way this thing comes apart is first you take the bolt out the center of the shaft which hold the skid plate/blades on and then once that is dropped you take off a retaining plate that 4 bolts hold it on and in which the oil seal is installed and then the shaft itself comes out.Are the bearing races the only thing that holds the output shaft to the gear box itself?Am i being to confusing here?Maybe my cutter is out dated huh?I went back to the parts place that i went to before to get the bearing a few years back and he didn't show anything.I gave him the bearing number with no such luck. But i did manage to find the bearings today at a AUTO parts store but i really don't want to put them in if all they are going to do is fall right back out and mess up the bearing.I got $100 in 2 bearings,2 races and 1 seal.
