Help!!! I need some quick advise. I found this F-40 for sale. The feller just got it in, that makes him the second owner. A picture of it is on the photo gallery. (Some day I gotta figure out how put it in the discussion forum.) It runs pretty good, engine sounds ok. It needs a lot of cosmetics, hood is pretty straight, grille looks like a cow hit but i think it can be fixed. It needs a back rim, back tires are pretty decent, fronts would run a long time but look crappy. The left tool box fender need a lot of work, tool box is shot. Asking $3400. This is the first one I've ever seen, what do you think? Are these worth anything when they're done? I've got a TO-20 now and I've got the itch again. Ho boy!

Hi Irv, I am in eastern Iowa and bought an F-40 about a month ago. It is in better shape than the one you are describing, and came with a very nice loader. About all it needs are tires and paint. I know I got a deal, but mine was $600. My point is deals can be found. About a week after I bought mine there was another one for sale in the paper, I do not know the price but they seem to be easier to find here in Iowa.

I've got an F-40 that my dad bought new. I wish mine was in that good condition. The tarp just came off of it for the first time in 15 years. Restoration begins this winter.

None the less, that one appears to be rough.

What sort of shape mechanically? Does it run OK? Is everything there? Steering tight? Lift work? Clutch good? Guages work?

The F-40 is worth a few bucks more than a Massey Harris of the same vintage, and even a few bucks more than a Massey FErguson 50, provided they're in equal condition. Production was less than 2 years. There aren't a lot of them. A mint (or well restored) F-40 is a very collectable tractor. But the one pictured needs a LOT of TLC. I'd say anything over $2500 would be excessive, and I'd balk at anything over $1750 for that one. BUT, I saw an F-40 High Arch sell at auction last spring. The High Arch generally brings less than the Standard like your picture. This one was rough in appearance, AND rough mechanically. It brought $3100. I was shocked.

For reference, I've seen a couple very well restored F-40's sell. Both brought over $5500. They were PERFECT though.

Now you got me wondering whether I ought to tackle this one or not. The sheet metal is not a problem. I know I can do that. It's just that they're really scarce around here and and I like the looks of them. Like I said in my first post, the engine runs pretty good, needs a little carb work, I'm guessing. I drove it and it runs out good. The steering box is good but it needs tie rod ends and steering wheel. I think it has about 3600 hours on the tach but it doesn't work so who knows how many more. I figure a guy would have pretty close to 5 grand in this when it was done, maybe more, sooooo...hmmmm. Thats a lot of money in a tractor that you're never going to use. That one in the photo gallery owned by Paul Nelson is so sweet. I could just see that on my yard.:^)

By the way, what is a high arch model? I know nothing about 40's.

Thanks for the info.

F-40 high arch or row crop are the same tractor but
with higher wheels rear are 38" instead of 28" for the utility model and the front axle spindles are higher than the utility tractor. The only mechanical difference is in the differential gear reduction
(different crown gear) to compensate for the wheels diameter.

Good luck !

Joe,
Thanks for the info on the high arch model.
I see now, which gets me to thinking, if one was to put 38" wheels on a utility model with the higher ratio rear end, it would scoot down the road pretty good in high gear, in other words, a great one for tractor rides. Of course, you'd have so durn much money in it you'd have to do SOMETHING with it. :^) Is that a picture of your tractor, by the way?

Hi

Unless you absolutely want an F-40
tractor in that condition
I think $1400 shd be fair price

An MH-50 or MF-50 are very similar except for the
hood and grill. For $3400 you can have one in far better condition.

My 2¢

Joe,
Thanks for the reply. That's kind of what I was thinking, too. It seemed a little steep for the condition but I thought maybe these brought more than a Massey because there's not that many of them. It always helps to sleep on it, too. I doesn't seem quite as appealing this morning as it did last night. My wife will probably be happy to hear that!
