Hello, I just bought a tractor and I have many questions.
1.What is the difference between a 40 and an F-40
2.Where is the serial number located?
3.The engine is Z134644877 this is a gas engine correct?
4.What operators manual do I need?
5.Mine appears to have been dark green with beige sheet metal, all I have seen on the internet are silver/beige. Were any green/beige?
Thanks in advance, Adam.

Greener,

Becareful before going off and assuming beige and flint metallic grey paint colors. The very first F-40's (and read as rare) were dark green with Grey sheet metal. Then there was a short time of Gerrn with Beige sheet metal.

Paul (AZ) is one of the experts on the color schemes of the F-40.

I'll let him know to look up your post.

Also, if you cannot find your data plate (left side of dash) then there is also a casting code on the transmission housing just below the left steering arm. The numbers read #-letter-#. and represent Day Month year of when the housing was cast.

i.e. 25-G-6 is 25th of July 1957
A = Jan.
B = Feb.
C = Mar. etc.
I have never seen "I" used and think it is skipped, thus,
J = Sep.
K = Oct
L = Nov.
M = Dec.

This is not a direct dating method, but the castings were usually assembeled into tractors within 2 to 4 months of manufacture.

If your new to Fergusons or just want to know more consider joining the Ferguson Enthusiasts of North America.

Jeff

Jeff, It appears that mine was green/beige. I still haven't found any evidence of the plate. I also can't find the casting code you refer to. It reads: HF with a box around it, 180-402-M1, CWC, A55 That is all I can find on the housing. Please let me know if there is anywhere else to check, or if I am reading in the right place. Thanks, Adam

I had the order messed up. It is Letter-#-#

Thus your A55 could be the casting code. And would read January 5-1955. This is very interesting as the F-40 was not released until 1956. However, development, and initial test tractors were built earlier. The green body suggests a very early F-40.

Another, possibility is that it may be a TO-35 in F-40 sheet metal. They had the same engine. I do not know enough about the differences between the F-40 and TO-35 to verify this theory for you.

Reply to the e-mail and I will get some other guys to look into it. sounds interesting.

Jeff.

The casting code will be on the side of the transmission case. In the mould it was a removable plate held in by two screws. Thus, on the case it appears as a rectuangular area with screw heads at each end. In the middle are the raised letter/number combination. Sometimes these are hard to read. But the area to look is just below and in front of the shift levers on the sides of that housing.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

Jeff, That is where I am looking, on one side is an oval plate that was rivited CWC, and a rectangular plate that was screwed A55. On the other side is an oval screwed plate 1 1-F, and a smaller oval screwed plate 1FC. The raised plate casting that is rectangular is the A55 one, please let me know if you have heard of any other exceptions to this dating code, as I am pretty sure that is the correct one. Thanks for all the help and please don't give up, I am very curious. Adam

Lester has given you good info. In addition, FYI the F-40 is the same basic tractor, with different sheet metal, as the MF-50 and the Massey Harris 50. I have a "57 that was red but I repainted it beige. It has the flint grey castings.

Hi Adam Congrats on your purchase. I have a Ferggie 40 an i love it. I will try to answer your questions to the best of my knowlege. First an F40 an a 40 are the same but Massey Ferguson did make an indusrrial tractor that was named the MF40 Not the same. The ser.# should be under the steering wheel on the dash, its on a plate and should start with F40. Mine happens to be an F403500 ser#. The engine is a Z134 Continental gas an around 32 hp.Its a very efficent engine. Depending on what you plan to do as far as repairs an operators manual will serve you fine. They have them on this site. The color should be either biege an flint grey or green with a red grill. You either have a 1956 or 57 as these were the only 2 yrs they made them. You can tell the year by where the knob to open the grill is located. The 56 was half way up on the side an the 57 was closer to the top. Some folks painted them red an some grey but biege is the right color. If you have any questions or just want to chat with another F40 fan feel free to email me,ok? Im in Vermont. Good luck an enjoy your F40 Lester

Lester, thank you very much! I'm sure I will be in touch. Mine is painted red with Massey Ferguson and Deluxe decals. It came with a newer loader attached, and a 3 point mower. I am glad to know what manual I need. Thanks again, Adam
