TO-35 Idling too fast

Carb was, purportedly, rebuilt & I have not been able to idle engine down below about 6-7,000rpm On closer examination the fuel adjust screw was missing tension spring. I found a spring & when I took out screw found that tip of this pointy screw is bent, a little. Would that require replacement of the screw or will it work O.K. I also blew a bunch of crud out of fuel line & cleaned the hidden screen. Would carb be a reason for the fast idle? I set the points & timing & fooled around w linkages & gov. screw but to no avail, it wants to speed up & dies on me if I go lower than 6,000rpms. Otherwise runs well & the oil leaking from plugs is diminishing. Now contemplating carb rebuild. What do you think

I wonder if your throttle rod and governor control rod and carb to gov. are properly adjusted. We had the same problem with fast idle and not able to keep the tractor at the speed we wanted, you can get a IT manual at tractor supply it will help you alot it has us, good luck

The first thing I would check is the placement of the throttle valve in the throttle bore of the carburetor. It could be upside down or inside out as this would keep the throttle valve from closing. This valve must be put in with the idle stop screw backed off so the valve can be completely sealed off by tapping it lightly before the finally tightening on the thottle shaft.Second if the theaded portion on the main adjustment screw is not bent it will not hurt anything since you have to adjust it anyway. This former sentence applies if you can adjust it too lean or too rich.Going back to the throttle valve is machined to be in the correct relation to the idle orifice and the transfer slot which is often prescent in many carburetors is part of controlling the idle and transfer between the idle and high speed working RPMs of the engine.Post back again and let us know how it comes out.CENTAUR

Could be any number of things causing it to idle too fast, if it is sucking air in at the manifold to carb joint or manifold to head or the throttle shaft in the carb.is worn, you really need to replace that adjuster screw, if it is bent then it can suck more air through than it should do. I would think that you will need to set the governor linkage properly as they are very particular on the Continental engine, this is unlikely to be the cause of it idling too fast but unless it is set correctly you wont get the performance from the engine. If you need the info, email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk
and tell me what you need.....John

Wow! Thats some TO 35 - idling @ 6,000 rpm. Thought they blew up around 4,000 ..... .

O.K. I'm obviously NOT good with #s so you have to realize when I say its Idling at 6,000rpms I really mean 600rps now that thats clear I do have the manual & did adjust all the whatever parts on the throttle/gov thing & did cause it 'accidentally' to idle about 550rpms somewhat improved. though dont know exactly what 1/32 over travel means. Below about 550 it just flat-out dies. Other than that it runs well. Thanks

Karman, big difference between 600 & 6000..., I thought you were having a fast racing engine problem, not a slow idle problem. The slow idle is basicallycontrolled by two things, linkage adjust, and the idle mixture screw (small adjust screw). The big adjust screw is the power mixture screw and that kicks in above ~600-800 rpms, and the idle mix screw no longer has any impact above that speed. The governor isn"t really doing anything at that low speed. My guess is you still have a linkage adjustment problem, they are very particular and may take a couple rounds of adjustments to get it lined out. Adjust your idle mix screw per the manual. Also check for air leaks where your carb may be sucking air at the manifold connections, that will cause your problem.

Thanks, I am sure it require additional adjustment & will go over everything again until it begins to behave like a proper Ferguson should.

My TO sounds like the engine is going to shatter into a million pieces if I ramp up to 2000 rpms, I don't like to go that high. Work'in speed for me is ~1800 rpms.
