The battery on my to 35 12 volt blew up last winter. I thought was a faulty battery. I really have not put much hours on the replacement, but did notice today after maybe an hour of being on, that there was fluid seepage from the battery (sealed battery), and it looks like the sides were bulging out. I check the volts which were at 16 volts at a high idle. Is that the proper voltage, or is it being overcharged? What other things should I be looking for. Or is not even a problem? Thanks Terry

Voltage should never exceed 14.2. 16 volts will destroy the battery, and as you have experienced, sometimes violently. Your voltage regulator is not working.

Have to disagree with 16v destroying a battery. Depends on factors such as capacity / liquid / gel / vented / sealed / heat and so forth.
My marine batteries are regulated at 14.9V charge, 14.2 float - only two volts below your 16V. Usual charge rate for a 12V battery is around 14.5 volts (14.2 is a tad low), but a 12V battery can take much more for short periods. Been known to fast charge them on a 24V charger.
Seems to me your problem is overcharging combined with a sealed battery. You say it's 16V at high idle - does it continue to rise with increasing revs? Also, if it's gassing, make sure there's no sparks around - it's hydrogen gas that's given off!

To the contrary, 16 volts IS damaging high. The electron potentials of the CHEMSTRY set 14.2 volts as full charge. That's the maximum voltage the battery will taper off to zero current, if it has a standard 1.280 SG electrolyte. One might apply a but more voltage to equalize the charge of the several cells, but the next thing needed will be more water to replace that dissociatedd by the other cells that were overcharged in the process.

Thanks to both of you. I will start by putting on the old original voltage regulator and see what happens with that. I had replaced it only cuz i was redoing all wiring at the time of restoring.

I do not have the original voltage regulator as thought. Before I purchase is there something I could check or is the voltage at 16 volts on battery enough of a test. I did check and even when I reved the engine it stayed at 16+volts. Thanks Terry

If the regulator base isn't grounded it won't regulate. If its the wrong regulator for the generator wiring it won't regulate.
