third party image

A picture from Glenn Alderton, a superb aviation photographer from NZ.

This picture was posted on the aviation.binaries newsgroup, and was probably taken at Wagga airport.

The fergie is attached to a restored North American AT-6, SNJ, or Harvard - depending on who used the aircraft! It was an advanced trainer used world-wide in WW II, and sold surplus for $500 - $1000 after that war.

Some in the "banana republics" and other third world countries were even fitted with guns.

Hi there. Found this image of mine onthis forum.
Just thought I'd correct a few deatsils for you. While I like NZ, i am a visitor at times only. I still like the world to know I am an Australian :-)

The Aircraft in Question was acquired from NZ but is now owned by Jim Best of South Australia. and this is where the aircraft was actually photographed :-)

Cheers

Glenn

Air New Zealand used fergies as aircraft tugs back in the day. They were white, naturally enough. My TEA28 has a white fuel tank. I guess the original rusted out at some stage. Where I live we launch boats from the beach. In a 250 meter radius we have 9 Fergies, 20s, 28s and 35s

An old Fergie is a great tow machine, not surprising it was used in aircraft towing, I am from USA and our Fergie could tow trailers better than our larger tractors on our farm. Up and down hills.

Reminds me of another bloke in Camden who had just finished restoring a Stearman to immaculate flying condition, then got an old TEA20 Fergie to push it about with and because he was still in a restoring mood, restored the Fergie to near new condition as well!!!!!
Regards Dave

What a great photo. I wonder, were any Fergusons sold with equipment specifically for airfield use? I've seen photos of old David Browns that were supposedly set up at the factory for aviation use. Thanks for sharing that with us.

There were lots of Ferguson's used on airfields and in the military but non as far as I know were set up like the David Brown Tug-master. All I have seen looked just like standard Tractors, they weren't even the Industrial types we have over here, now watch all the pictures roll in of Airfield models.

Interesting. Looks like it is being towed from the main UC legs? Only ever seen a Harvard (and many other tail draggers) towed from the tail wheel.

In NZ - you mentioned photographed at Wagga? Many of the Harvards in Australia in fact came from South Africa.
