Bob,

I went out on Mapquest.com and put in Longreach, Aust. and on the 10 mile/10 KM regional map that part of Aust. look down right over crowded, with "town" names every mile to 2 miles.

However, when you zoom in there is basicly 1 road to each "town".

I am guessing that each "town" is really a individual ranch or so. What is it really like over there?

Jeff

I may well be a bit biased, but the country around Barcaldine and Blackall is absolutely Magnificent!!!!! !!! Used to fly over it twice a week for years and never tired of it. Rolling golden hills beautiful gum trees fertile soil, just a bit short of water maybe. Have to agree Bob, a cold beer in the Blackall pub, or any pub after a hot day on the Fergie..... Heaven!!!!! !!!!!
Regards
Dave

Hi Jeff. Town name every mile to 2 miles..... ?? I suspect the "towns names" you may see are cattle stations?

You could fire a canon down the Warrego Highway and be very unlucky to hit even a dead kangaroo!!!

27 kms (app 17 miles) east of Longreach on the Warrego Highway is the small town of Ilfracombe. It is the only town between Longreach and east to Barcaldine, a distance of 106 kms (app 65 miles).

If you were to zoom in on Ilfracombe in Google Earth, on the north side of the Warrego Highway as it passes through the town you should see the long row of old farm machines, trucks and tractors, including perhaps the Fergy.

I just looked up your Mapquest site. The "town" names of Camden Park, Kelso, Allandale etc are all cattle and sheep stations - they are not towns.

The Ilracombe council web site is at:>Link

I>Link can assure you that a cold ale on a hot day at the Wellshot Hotel in Ilfracombe is about as good as it gets!!!

My work involved around 50,000 miles per year on remote Outback roads and tracks. It's is a unique and wonderful country but almost uninhabited. (Except for millions of kangaroos and emus!) Cattle stations are not measured in acres or hectares, but in hundreds and even thousands of square miles.

Dave ... "Rolling golden hills..."

If it weren't for the curvature of the Earth, you'd be able to see Johanesburg from Longreach!!!

:-)

Love the flat country, stumpy mulga scrub and the road as straight as a die as far as the eye can see to the horizon - no where for the traffic cops to hide their radar!!!

Many is the time I've checked the Toyota Prado on board computer and can confirm the vehicle is governed at 182 kilometers per hour max. Not bad for a Jap 4WD!!!

I pick up the new Toyota Prado late this week. Selected the more sedate 3 liter, turbo intercooled, common rail diesel with six speed auto!

Ilfacombe, Birdsville, Barcaldine, Blackall, Tambo - any Aussie country pub for a cold ale on a hot day!

The Fergy at Ilfracombe is located at 23 deg 29' 19.04" South; 144 deg 30' 17.21" East. The Google Earth image is not clear enough to see the museum vehicles.

Interesting stuff this Google Earth!! I can see my Ferguson TEA20 parked in my back yard at 26 deg 34' 21.99" South; 148 deg 46' 36.03" East!
