24 vs. 28 wheels - TO35

My TO-35 currently has 24" wheels, unfortunately they're mis-matched (one stock, one from a later 35, I think, though it was originally painted yellow, so...?). I have been unable to find a plain, stock 24" wheel disc. You apparently cannot buy they new, and all efforts to buy used ones have been adventures.

I shudder at the expense of new wheel discs AND new rims AND new tires, but are the 28" wheels much more common? Is there any advantage to them?

I'm contemplating new rear tires in the next year or so and want to sort this out before that expense. I'll gladly pay market for a good used stock 24" disc, though.

I switched my 1955 TO-35 from 28" to 24". I got new rims and centers from Miller Tire. I think they are designed for Fords but they work fine.

I have a lot of hills and I find the weighted and splayed 24"s to be very secure.

Benny, drop me a line at my email, if you like. I'm in WA but would probably pay shipping as there just don't seem to be many salvage yards out here.

Thanks for the suggestions for Ford wheels, I may give them a shot.

If I was scratching my head in a Fergie dealer in 1955, what would I be thinking about if I was given a choice between 24 or 28 inch wheels? What would be the pros and cons?

Green:

The 24" rims with 14.9 tires were optional "flotation" tires on MF and Ford AG tractors in the 50s and 60s. The 14.9 tires are wider than 13.6s but approximately the same diameter. They were supposedly better for use in soft soil.

The 14.9X24 tires were also used on industrial versions.

Hi Greenbank I had that same problem a few yrs back with my F40. I found that the rims from a Ford Industrial are the samething. You are right you cant buy new ones they just dont make them. The ones I got were off of a Ford 4000.I dont where you live but try some salvage yards or you may get a line on some in here. Good Luck Lester

Are the Ford and MF exactly the same? I have interchanged them also but I think the wheel studs and holes in the rim are slightly larger on the Ford than the MF. I beleive the Ford is 5/8" and the MF is 9/16". The MF lug nuts will sit a little deeper in the Ford rim and the studs will fit slightly looser in the wheel holes. I was a little concerned, but so far no problems.

Hi Anthony Yes youre right the holes are bigger. I should have added that. I used my old centers. Other than they they fit fine. Thanks for the reminder. Lester
