Hi, Russsell again here in Ky, Boy were you right about the manuals, service and owners, good info that I need to know about tractors especially being a beginning novice, but not much help on trouble shooting or answering questions from a dummy. I went back out to where the tractor is and tried to start it with the help of a friend who I believe has knowledge of things like this,or so I thought.I am beginning to think I am doing things backwards. I guess what I thought was a 6 volt system with an 8 volt battery may not be. It is an 8 volt battery but has a neg ground going to the dash.Does this mean it is already a 12 volt conversion? How do I tell for sure.It looks like a generator to me instead of alternator. The lettering is off the coil so ?, I will be back to it friday, really going to look for markings on all ignition parts, clean and double check all connections. History of this one since I got it. It started fine at the farmers, ran fine when I got it home. After a few times starting the switch on the dash (push button) broke. friend took of one of the wires off it and jumped it to the other one. It started and ran okay. 10 minutes later I blew a rear tire (put too much air in an old tire, thought it looked low) weekends over, Next week I put a new tire on Jumped it like I saw my friend do, Cables getting hot to hold started and ran for awhile and then starting to seem like it was lugging so I parked it shut it off then noticed gas leaking from around the carb area. Shut off the gas, weekend is over.Next week drain the carb and clean the bowl, jump the switch ?cables getting hot to hold, starts up runs good about 15 minutes later, hard to tell I was drinking and buddy was bush hogging,he said it just shut off and gas was leaking, turned gas off, weekend is almost over Hard to do it all just on weekends out at the land. This week Friend and I, same one, tried same way of starting, cables getting hot to hold, sparking and sounding like dead battery so friend says just hook up cables to another battery and try again. There for a brief few seconds the engine was turning over then back to the dead battery sound,ok hook up the cables to the truck,no difference. Friend says we need to take off the starter and look at it, I say no, look at the book, it says here that I should do this or that, he says nah that don't make any difference. ( I had printed a few pages from the forum to help me figure this out )Hard to do, but had to tell my help we were through for the day.I was going back and ask some question, my manuals would be there and I needed to learn more before I went any further.I'm reading the manuals, a whole bunch of postings on the forum, and slowly learning, but I hadn't realized how little I knew about a tractor. I just wanted one to bush and drag the drive maybe a small food plot.No matter how old you are I guess you will always have one more stupid in you. Would love to get a tune up kit, It may not have ever had one.Don't want to get the wrong one though. Boy do I need direction and a plan.12 volt with electronic ignition sure sounds good to me right about now. Back to my original query I guess about the 8 volt battery and the positive groud on mine. Sorry to ramble on, frustration maybe, but boy am I glad there is somewhere to go to ask for help.

Russell... the original system was of course, 6 volt positive ground and who knows what you have working now... With the 8 volt battery negative ground and the original generator (made to work with positive ground) and a cutout??? or regulator???, I'd be hard pressed to say that it is doing anything worthwhile. I think that the generator could have been repolarized (for negative ground), but like george says, it probably won't put out much more than 7 volts anyway... I think that you need to make a decision about 6 volts (positive ground) or 12 volts negative ground (forget the 8 volts) and rebuild the charging system. I don't think that the starter is an issue.. It will function on 6 to 12 volts negative or positve ground, but the other components in your system are of suspect. the coil is probably a 6 volt coil and can be used with 12 volts by adding a ballast resistor or replacing it with an actual 12 volt coil. The other components (points, condensor, etc.) don't care about the volts... escept light bulbs of course.. as for the fuel.. it is a problem with the float and/or the needle valve in the carburetor.. YOu may want to get a kit and rebuild the whole carbureator, but at least you need to fix the float/needle problem. It could be a sinking float, a dirty/sticking needle valve, etc...

Incidently, this far down on the list, only the classic view guys are likely to see your post... Jim

Thanks jim I agree about the carb,I thought it might be the choke since the lever just flpos around no spring to hold it open. Of course after reading the book I have turned the valve to reserve tank so may have sucked up something. Will double check all this over weekend. This will be the first time I have had a manual with me so it will help. Didn't know about gear shift starter switch either
