Delco one wire alternator on a TO-35

Hey guys, got some more questions about my Z134 equipped To-35. When I bought the tractor, the original generator and regulator had been replaced by a junkyard Delco alternator which was not charging. I replaced it with a rebuilt "one wire" Delco alternator from O'Reilly's, which bolted up perfectly. The alternator is the type that will not start charging until you get the rpm's up a little. When this happens, the alternator will slowly increase the charge until it reads about 15 volts, which seems a little high. The original ammeter reads squarely in the middle while the tractor is in use, when you turn on the headlamps it jumps to between 5 and 10 amps on the positive side. All was well for two months until this week. Now, when the alternator starts charging, it makes a loud squeal and sometimes even a minor grinding noise. I'm thinking the alternator has become damaged from being constantly full-fielded, or it is simply a defective unit. I'm wondering if any of you guys have experience with the Delco one wire alternators. Do they still require the use of a voltage regulator? There is a threaded post on the back of the alternator near the charging post. Grounding this post reduces the output to battery voltage, maybe this is where a regulator is supposed to hook up. If I opted to go with installing a factory generator setup, what parts would I need? I don't think the original voltage regulator is still on the tractor, or generator cutout. What does a generator cutout do anyway? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide, have a great weekend everybody!!

Hi Phil,I have not tried to connect it. I think the Ampmeter is not working. So I will replace meter ,switch and have the alternator checked to see that it is still putting out.When I get it together I will let you know the outcome ,I thank you for your asistances.Here is wishing you the best.

Does anyone have a complete wiring diaghram changing a TO35 (1956 model)to use a one wire altinator?

There is only ONE wire to connect. You would remove the wire from your existing GEN Regulator (Battery Term) and MOVE it to the Alternator Output. DONE!

Most choose to run a new wire, instead of using the old one, but connect to the same connection. (load side of your ammeter).

Thanks Phil,I connected it to the Battery side of the switch, but after leaveing it over night the battery was dead.I feel like the tractor is incorrectly wired.Reason for the one wire alternator wiring diaghram.Your thoughts please.

Dave, Your battery MUST be Negative Ground (USA) or the Diodes in the Alternator FRY. The ONE wire normally draws some current but that should not kill your battery overnight. What does your
ammeter indicate?

lance J. You have a defective unit, not your fault, take it back for a replacement.

1. The ammeter is wired for a +ve Ground, you need to reverse (swap sides) the wires connected to the ammeter such that it reads a discharge (not running) when the lights are On. Your ignition switch also should be connected to the "Load" side (same side as the wire to light switch) of the Ammeter. The Battery side of the ammeter should "only" have the wire that runs to a common terminal (selenoid) shared with the BIG battery cable.

2. The output of the Alternator needs to be connected to the LOAD side of ammeter. This will be the same ammeter terminal(side) that the Light Switch wire and the ignition switch wire are connected. The Ammeter will then read the charge rate of the battery.

I have a Delco one-wire alt. and have had no problems with it. It"s on my "48 TE 20.
It is my understanding that the voltage regulator is INTERNAL on this unit, so you should not be concerned about adding one.
I"d take it to a shop and have it tested. It"s free most places.
Please let us all know how this is resolved.

The alternator is NOT a "Delco".

It WAS a Delco, which has been butchered by aftermarket "one-wire" components.

MOST LIKELY, the threaded stud you have been grounding is a "TACH" connection.

Continuing to ground that connection will "let all the smoke out" of the alternator, if you haven't ALREADY done that!

It's REALLY simple to add an "Idiot light" or a $1.00 diode to a $10.00 "boneyard" alternator, and make an alternator that will excite at low RPM's.

i have [5] to-20s and all have one wire alts but i have mine made at a alt.shop and he puts in a early starter so they start charging at low rpm. NO expert but sounds like a bearing going south pull the belt and spin it by hand bet you have a tight spot

P.S.- The "12 volt conversion kit"(PN TO30ALT12V) sold on this website is listed as being for the TO-30 only, but it sure looks like it would drop right in on my TO-35. If the alternator in this kit is functionally the same as the O'Reilly's unit I have, then it would seem I only have a defective alternator. Any of you guys have experience with this kit or similar?
