The tractor castings and some other parts were painted with that red oxide to seal the castings before machining, you will see this throughout the tractor. That is the only "red" that was used on them, they were never painted anything other than Grey except special orders. i.e military, local authorities (large orders only) and they very often started off Grey anyway. The Transmission housing on the TE series were painted with some sealer for the Aluminium housing, not always red oxide.

The red should be the iron sealant to keep the oil from leaking through the porous cast iron.
The sealant of choice was Glyptal. It is available for around $55 per pint (I believe) through Eastwood. Do some shopping and it can be found cheaper.

toolman. I too have a TEA20-85. The castings are red inside - some type of casting primer/sealer - but there is no sign of red primer on the outside of my Fergy. My guess your tractor has been painted red at some time?

Bob, ye have to believe this. The axle housings, centerhousings and almost all other parts were dip painted directly from the conveyor system they were supplied by under the roof. But, the color could differ a bit, from reddish, to brownish. Beleive me, they did not dip only the inner walls of the parts... :-) how could that be done ? I mean, when a part is dipped, it is dipped. The only part dipped part I can rememeber is the gear stick, it was dipped partly so the lower end was not painted.
When it comes to the electron parts (aluminum like) they were painted in a zinc chromate paint as far as I know, as well as all studs and bolts threaded into any electron part were dipped in a zinc chromate solution to prevent corrosion. As it should be when someone repair those parts.
But, even the zinc chromate paint/solution could vary in color.
The reason they dip painted the parts was to cover everything with paint, so that after they had machined the parts, the machined surfaces was clean and without any paint. If they machined it first, and then paint it, the machined surfaces would be painted, and it was not wanted. Or, they could mask all the parts, but what a terrible job with all those small and big parts.
