I just bought a T0-30 and noticed the PTO has a screw on cover and some type of retainer hook keeping the PTO from being shifted in gear for use. Is something missing here or has the PTO not been used or just won't work on this model. This tractor was garaged for the last 20 years with hardly any use.....just wanted to know if someone knows about this PTO?

Thanks,
From California

Dads Fergie TO-30 only had an oil pressure gauge and an ammeter on the dash.

The cap on the PTO shaft is a safety device to preclude someone getting caught on the rotating shaft whilw working around the 3 pt hitch when the pump and PTO are engaged since they are not engaged independently. As far as the retainer for the PTO/pump drive lever, either it's worn and pops in or out of gear due to wear or someone wanted it "locked out".

THanks for the help. I'm gonna engage and keep my fingers crossed.....here's another question...are there H20 temp guages available...I see this one doesn't even have a water temp guage on console?
So, there must be a place for a sending unit?

Yes there is a capillary type gauge that uses a sensing bulb that fits in the gooseneck that connects the radiator to the cylinder head.

Regarding retaining bolt, perhaps owner used tractor for special purpose with no need for PTO and maybe had multiple drivers using it and wanted to make sure no one engaged the PTO (like maybe he had young drivers he didn't trust to leave it alone), so he secured it that way. Just a guess of course. As Bob said, remove it and try to engage it.

Screw on PTO cover is normal - simply screws off. It is a safety measure, covers the shaft when the hydraulics are engaged, and keeps dust and dirt off the PTO shaft.

Retainer hook where? Retaining the PTO engage lever on the transmission?

Or are you talking about a hydraulic lever stop on the quadrant?

Retainer hook where? On one of the bolts..holding the lever all the way to the rear.

Oooh ... Never heard of that, maybe a back shed mod to lock it in the disengage position due to a problem?

I'm not familiar with the TO20 or TO30 (I have a TEA20).

One of the TO30 guys or John (UK) should be able to give you an authoritive comment.

Just had a thought - did the previous owner use the tractor for a different purpose - e.g. towing a trailer - and wanted to disable the PTO and hydraulics?

Perhaps you should remove the retaining hook and try engaging the PTO lever? Depress clutch whilst stopped, then engage PTO lever.

Chris. The TEA20 never had a water temp gauge either, only oil pressure. You can buy a 2 inch universal gauge for around $20. On the Standard engine the sensor screws into the thermostat housing below the top radiator hose. Don't know the Continental engine.

If you are worried about water temp I suggest you give the radiator and block a good flush and refill with an anti freeze mixture. I had my radiator reconditioned for around $100, when a 50 year accumulation of sludge and rust was removed.

Reading this forum, I suspect over heating Continental engines leads to cracking in the block.
