Hi, has anyone replaced the oil bath air cleaner with a more modern equivalent, perhaps a paper air filter? I"d want to keep the same enclosure, but just use paper filters. I don"t do a lot of field work so dust shouldn"t wear them out TOO quickly.

Is this a stupid idea?

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

I have a question relating to the original oil bath air cleaner...
How do you clean the thing? I am new to this tractor and am trying to conduct some yearly maintenance. I just received teh tractor as a wedding gift and took the air filter off last night and it is NASTY! Can you pull the filter out and replace it? I cannot get the filter out of the canister and don't want to do too much damage. Any and all help is appreciated. Also, I have just ordered a manual so I will need any parts numbers that anyone can offer.

You can't pull it apart like that to clean it. Remove from tractor and put it to soak in some gasoline overnight then wash it out again. If the filling is rusted away you can get a refill from Sparex for that. It should be filled with the same oil as the engine and the oil should be changed daily and in dusty conditions twice daily.

What weight oil is good to replace in the oil bath on a TO-30?

You use the same oil as in the engine. The original servicing was to change the oil every day and twice a day in dusty conditions.

I clean mine by soaking it in a container with a degreaser such as simple green. The first time you may need to use paint thinner or a solvent to get the old crud out.

How do you get the mesh out though? I took the entire air cleaner off of the tractor, but I cannot get the bottom piece out to get the mesh out??? Thanks again.

To get the mesh out you have to carefully cut around the housing.

Tim, just soak it in degreaser and rinse it - I wouldn't try to pull the metal mesh out...

I'm sending you a private email as well in response...

My point in asking this question was 1) to find a less messy air cleaner, and 2) to have something easier to diagnose from an air supply standpoint. My 30 is running rough as well and I haven't figured it out yet.

Unless your air cleaner is near totally blocked, the rough running is not caused by the air supply. The carburtor is a "pressure balanced design" which means that the fuel bowl is vented to the carburetor inlet, not ambient pressure. The carburetor mixture (fuel/aiir ratio) is thus unaffected by air cleaner blockage. Maximum power, however, will be limited by restricted air supply. Make sure that you have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK before you mess around wth the carb. If you don't have that, even a new carb won't help. So check out the primary ignition circuit and that includes the mechanical condition of your distributor shaft/bushing. By all means clean the air cleaner to restore power.

If you do have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, then check the fuel supply, the timing, and the advance mechanism function. 85-90 % of poor running problems are caused by a poorly performing primary ignition circuit, ther emajority of the rest are caused by poor fuel delivery ad a small fraction are caused by a dirty carburetor

Check the archives. Someone gave a part# for a K&N foam filter a while back.

If I had the original I would not think of using paper unless it was only for show since the oil bath cleaner cannot be beat but it does have to be serviced by cleaning and useing the oil specified. CENTAUR

Why?

What is wrong with oil bath filter? Best you can get and probably the cheapest.
