Clutch not working TO30

I was using my (52) Ferguson TO30 today and the clutch went out. When I press the clutch, there is no resistance at all, it goes to the floor. I ran it into a chain link fence before I got it shut down. It is still there in the back patch, stuck in 1st gear.

Any suggestions?

WHat is the 1st thing to check?

Chris, for sudden and unexpected clutch failure, I support the idea of the clutch pedal slipping on the shaft. I see your post about it looking like it's working, but of course it will when there is no pressure/resistance against it. Checking the pedal adjustment is an EASY check before splitting your tractor. You need about 3 hands to do it easily, but can be done with 2 hands. Loosen the clamp bolt on the peddle, raise the peddle up to 3/16 " gap between the lever and the stop, which is the radius ball mount. Tighten the clamp bolt down and check your clutch...if that don't fix it.... your gonna be splitting your TO-30 to get at the clutch. Actually, once you get past the denial and frustration, it's a pretty straight forward job that you can do in a long afternoon.

that clearance should be 3/8" not 3/16" that was an error in the manual they printed. the smaller clearance would be too close to the bearing when everything got hot and it may possibly have the bearing running which would overheat the bearing and the grease would run out and ...well you know the rest of the story.

My guess would be that the pins that hold the clutch fork to the shaft broke and so there is nothing to transmit the pedal force to the fork that actuates the clutch. Either that or the fork itself failed but I thinks that's unlikely.

Hi Jerry,
If that is so... Splitting is the only option, right? How quickly can a clutch job be performed, by a 1st timer? Excluding parts time delivery...

Splitting is the only option. If you've split the tractor before it's pretty straight forward and could take you maybe 4-8 hrs depending how fast you work and what you find when you open it. Your not working on the Space Shuttle. It's very mechanically straight forward. If you have to chase parts, it could stretch it out significantly.
If you haven't done this before, get the Factory manual because it has some tips that are helpful. personally, unless there is a very pressing need to get the tractor back into service, I would not order parts until I split it and verified the problem. Then I'd determine the condition of the clutch, pressure plate, flyweel, and throwout bearing. As long as you have it split you should check these and see how much life they have left and consider replacing anything that looks badly worn.

Re: more details about the clutch in reply to Chris M (tx), 04-22-2007 16:48:47
A couple of more details:

~The tractor is stuck in 1st gear, rammed against the fence. I could NOT get it out of gear at all.

~It has been running just fine up until this happened... The clutch action has seemed normal to me. It hasn't been slipping or anything unusual.

~I said in the prior post that the clutch pedal has no resistance... I had a Porsche 924 more than a decade ago and one day the clutch cable just snapped in two. This is what that feels like. No resistance at all when you press the pedal down.

~What linkage is involved on the TO30 to make the clutch work? I have a basic understanding of how clutches work. I have replaced one in said 924 mentioned... I do have a service manual... it shows pictures of the clutch, but I found no pictures of the linkage from pedal to clutch.

~What can break on clucthes? I know the disk lining can wear out...

~Am I for sure looking at splitting the tractor? How fast can that be done and reassembled (clutch job)?

~Are there any pictures anywhere on ytmag.com or elsewhere showing what this job looks like step by step?

Did the clutch pedal STAY on the floor after you took your foot off of it? If so then it sounds like the bolt came loose on the clutch pedal itself letting it slip on the shaft.

In that case pull the pedal back up and tighten the bolt and you should be good to go.

As for getting it out of gear: Get another vehicle to "lean" on it to push it into the fence a few more inches to take the pressure off the shifter lever. Alternatively you could try grabbing the belt and turning the engine backwards with the key off (might help to pull the plugs first).

Yep... the pedal stayed on the floor... But I looked at the shaft. The bolt is not loose and the shaft moves with the pedal like it is supposed to.
