I just bought a '50 TO20 that has been wired 12 volt - or should I say jury rigged 12 volt. It has an alternator, Delco I think, and it has a single pole toggle to cut out the charge when the battery doesn't need charge (you have to watch the gauge). The regulator (not now wired in) coil, points, condenser etc. seem to be the original 6 volt and there is a rectangular ceramic resistor wired in near and distributor. When I can get it started it runs ok – maybe a little rough, but leaning the carb seems to have taken care of that. The problem is starting. I pulled plugs and the spark is weak, so weak I am surprised it starts at all. Does anyone have a good wiring diagram and parts list for changing 6 volt to 12 volt? I assume that since the 12 volt alternator puts out I would need to replace the regulator with a 12 volt (getting rid of the toggle) and replace the coil with a 12 volt. I assume the points set doesn’t care 6 or 12, but what about the condenser? Oh, my distributor is a Delco with clips

Lots of stuff in the archives about 6 to 12 conversions.... And my comments will not fix your spark problem. Jerry/MT (and others) have a number of good posts on this subject ... But, just a couple quick comments on the conversion... assuming you have a Delco with an internal regulator, it doesn't sound to me that it is that bad..... 1-the switch is probably in the alternator reference voltage line to keep from discharging the battery when it it not running. It should probably be on when running and off when not. Most installations use a diode (conducting towards the alternator) for this function, not a switch.
2-the resistor is probably a Ballast resistor to drop the voltage to the coil so that you can use the same 6 volt coil (some 12 colt coils have this also)
3-Everything else (starter, points, condensor, ...) will work just fine with a 12 volt system except change the light bulbs... but this probably has been done already.

A note on the starter... the starter will be a little peppier on 12 volts than at 6 volts, but since it is only used mommentarily, it will not self destruct... Some have remarked that they think that the starter nose cones break more frequently at 12 volts, but no definitive data.. Jim

Bill it sounds like you have a little mess there. Just curious are you using a 6/12v battery? All the system components need to be of the same voltage other wise you are going to have unpredictable results. 1.Alternator 2.Starter 3.Battery 4.Ignition coil 5.Regulator (internal on many newer 12v alternators)
6.Starter Solenoid (you may not have to worry about this if you have the 'Stick Starter' type)
7.and don't foget the lights (if desired)

I am not sure about the points and distrubitor componenets maybee someone else can help out with that question. The ignition switch and head light switch are not usually voltage specific and should be ok. You may want to go back to the original generator and restore the 6v system unless you are willing to swap out all the items that are not 12v. Just from what you have explained i'm guessing that you have a 6V battery, coil, starter and regulator. If you wan't to fully convert you will need to change the battery, coil, and starter. If you are using an AC-Delco alternator they usually have an internal regulator. If it deosn't you will need a regulator too. Hope this was helpful. If you don't find a good wiring diag i'll draw you one up. Daniel(TN)

Thanks all - I have her running. The 12v coil in place of the 6v and some carb adjusting did the trick. I still have to clean out that rats nest of wiring and wire it according to a wiring diagram. I thank Doug in Ill for the many emails and the TO30 diagram - this is a great forum.
