Hello, I am planning to change the exhaust on my TO35. I would like some opinions (we all have those) on vertical and horizontal systems. I personally like the horizontal but also recognize some advantages to having a vertical system. The original system was horizontal and the bracket is secured to the axel casting. Thanks in advance!

Sincerely, John

I wanted to hang around the back end of the tractor cutting wood. And, the horizontal muffler used to get crunched up when I backed into a snowbank.
Also, I was concerned about traveling over dry grass in the summer.
Finally, I was suffering from hot foot.
So I switched to vertical. Now I do have to watch out for branches, but haven"t noticed the fumes going in my face.
Altogether I do prefer the vertical one.

depends on what you are going to be doing. I put my up due to the fact that I going to be mowing in tall grass in fields that might flame up if its was to back fire.

I didn't like looking back while plowing corn stalks to see corn stalks blowing red from being ignited by the hot muffler. Didn't like the prospect of igniting a windrow while baling hay either. I put on an upright after I made my own adapter. It gets bent up with low hanging tree limbs but it doesn't ignite the crop. The first muffler was a car muffler which made the tractor much quietor, but the crimped ends didn't stand up to tree limbs. The present muffler is a car glass pack with welded ends and its stronger than the pipe.

I like the horizontal exhaust, except for the "hot foot" problem.

I think I have a solution for that, though. Next time the exhaust needs replaced I"m gonna take it to a custom muffler shop. I plan to ask them to replicate what"s there with one exception - Move the muffler farther forwards.

I"m hoping that with the mufler a little forward of the footrest the "hot foot" problem will mostly go away.

If I get it done successfully I"l post here with pics and let y"all know if it worked.

Is there a shield on the step?

Matt - The right-side step has a heat shield (probably asbestos) riveted on the full length of the step. I'm looking for a good replacement material that won't absorb water and still be an effective heat shield. Any suggestions?

heat and fumes john. i usta hafta run trenchers at work and i hated the verticle stacks! it seemed no matter which way i faced, the wind would always be blowing those fumes and the heat back into my face. i'm leavin' my 35's exhaust down low...just my preference. by the way...how's that new shop coming along?
